Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, a True Star is an example of the 70s Art Rock as a genre as well. (Art Rock = Pop Rock with a huge artistic approach)
It's not Psychedelic rock nor Progressive rock album.

An old fan here. I went at Knebworth Festival 1979 just to see Todd Rundgren & Utopia on stage. Though, A Wizard, a True Star is CLASSIC Art Rock album, not Psych.

"Art Rock"
Is English.
And 1979, is not "1973".

Too many great ones to narrow it down to just one, but I'll give a shout-out to Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock because it was the first psych album I bought and it's the one that opened my ears to the genre. "The World's On Fire" (8:21) was my introduction to extended jams and long instrumental solos. With its juxtaposition of heavy rock, weird effects, and lush Associationish vocal harmonies, it still holds up well today. The first Vanilla Fudge album also opened my ears with its pioneering use of those long symphonic instrumental intros.

Does Chalon Road by The Turtles count, songs such as the owl and can't you hear the cows have sounded pretty psychedelic

Although there are more obvious examples, I would go with The Who's "Tommy".

Not just for "Amazing Journey", "Sparks", etc., but also for the overall feel of the album and the emotions it elicits.

I wont lie I know nothing about contemporary psychedelia except from the 80s when there was a underground surge for the genre.
I can strongly suggest these artists from that decade.
1.The Nomads (Norwegian psych-punk) 5 stars
Dream Syndicate Velvets meet Creedence psychedelia
3.Plan 9( all great.start with Dealing with the Dead 5 stars. Can be found on Plan 9 web site.
4.Hoo Doo Gurus&Lime Spiders from Australian psychedelia 4.5 stars.
5.Rain Parade & True West(LA psychedelia 4.5 stars
7.The Soft Boys & Robyn Hitchcock(together&solo) 5 stars
This is most of what IMO is essential 80s psychedelia.Again the SQ is great on all of these recordings.Happy hunting.Peace.
Thanks. If you adhere to these lists you will truly have the beggining of a superb collection without blowing your bread on all the subpar stuff out there.
You've forgotten two of the very best 80's psychedelic records by The Dukes of Stratosphear (band members of the british band XTC) unfortunately.
