Back in the 60's it was the "freaks" (us) and the "straights" (them).

Now that I'm old, with my freak flag flying/wire rim glasses/and facial hair still , I guess kids might still call me a freak!

IMO, the last "first era" psychedelic hit was Tommy James' Dragging the Line in America. In the UK Hawkwind's Silver Machine in 1972 probably holds that title.

I loved and still love a lot of 60s and 70s psychedelia, and I think that Talk Talk’s latter albums picked up the ball and carried very well.

The spacey harmonica-playing is very reminiscent of early Country Joe & The Fish, as it is on the Mark Hollis solo album:

So much great music of this era appeared on 7" only, so here's one of the first compilations of UK Psych and one of my faves

    A 60's SF band that just missed your timeframe...but a must-have. 1970.

Hi, a band that I discovered buying second hand 60s was SEA TRAIN and his first title on A&M 4171 US 1969 that top 168 . Really it enjoys me, and also in collecting vinyl artcovers, the backcover with its colourfoul likes me.

I heard "Thrillington" for the first time today, and although my psychedelic classification was a bit of a joke, it's trippy in a cranky, very playful way.

I completely forgot about that one, YouTube has the full album I looked it up after reading your post.
I was 14 also, I was expecting more like their debut album and yes it blew me away too.

Yeah, I feel the same way. If Janis only had a better back up band... she would have kicked more asses than she did then. I know the guys from Big Brother like to say that they did the instrumentals and everything for the songs, but let’s be honest, Janis’ vocals MADE this album. Just as John Simon said “There was Janis— the boss. Smart, loud, mercurial, she had the vision. Cheap Thrills is the album it is because of Janis, because of her raw emotion, her energy”. I couldn’t agree more.

Hell no, I can't agree. Sam Andrew and James Gurley are first class acid-rock guitarists. Big Brother were not a blues band. They were one of the best ballroom dance bands of the early SF scene.
