My favorite is Dead Reckoning. It's the one that turned my opinion of Bogart on its ear. After that, Casablanca. (Come on, Bogart and Bergman AND Rains AND Lorre? Jackpot.)

The book doesn't really make that much sense either.

Re: Casablanca....the famous part near the end, "maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow..."
Am I the only one who thinks he just reads those lines in a flat, lifeless, clinical way?

Caine Mutiny. Whenever I happen upon it, usually on TCM, I will watch, even though I own it. A beautiful late career performance, Bogie was nominated for Best Actor against eventual winner Marlon Brando and On The Waterfront. Any other year, he would have won.

I love 'em all. But "The Big Sleep" is one of my favorite movies period.
I also love "The Maltese Falcon" (it's a top 10), "Petrified Forest," and most of "To Have and Have Not." And "Casablanca," of course.
Also have to give a nod to "In a Lonely Place," what a great film.
OK, like I said, all of 'em.

There are so many, to be honest. A couple of the bigger ones I'm not that fond of - African Queen and Caine Mutiny, but give me those I mentioned plus Key Largo, Deadline USA, The Desperate Hours, Dark Passage, In a Lonely Place, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, High Sierra, The Petrified Forest and ... well, I've probably missed a few too!

True, and much of the dialogue was close to word-for-word to what was in the novel, with some changes to accommodate the restrictions of the Hays code. The film was highly consistent with the novel.
