Love this one, and I consider it noir-ish. Definitely darker than I thought 50s billy wilder would be. Kirk Douglas is perfect in it, and it's probably more relevant today

"Sweet Smell of Success" is noir-ish in its plot and tone, certainly a psychological noir. It has has some of the deepest blacks and most lusterous B+W cinematography of any film I've seen A great film to watch with the sound off just to study the directing. Hell, its just a great film. Sweet Smell of Success Blu-ray »

It really captures pre rock and roll New York City so vividly. Not a Sam Spade noir, but like Ace in the Hole, a film that would appeal to those who love noir.

I just saw The Big Heat with Glenn ford, and I'd say it's essential noir. Looks like twilight time has it on Blu but as an expensive $30 set with scant extras. Still may end up buying it

Again, many thanks for the suggestions. I picked up a couple of them at the most recent Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% off sale.

Woman On The Run with Ann Sheridan came out a couple of months ago on Blu-ray with great commentary by Eddie Muller (as usual)---I highly recommend it. Lots of great San Francisco scenery (although the opening sequence is actually filmed in LA's Bunker Hill neighborhood).

I can't believe The Asphalt Jungle has not been mention, on blu-ray, directed by Huston with Sterling Hayden. A great film.

I LOVE the look of LA in Kiss Me Deadly, especially Bunker Hill! Not to mention Mike Hammer's secretary!

I saw Rififfi on blu ray in HMV yesterday. It's region B but a classic French film noir.

I keep meaning to get the Criterion edition of this but then they put out something that really interests me (por ejemplo, Chaplin, the Tati box set, A Hard Day's Night, Mad World, Lone Wolf and Cub)

For more contemporary noir, Mulholland Falls and L.A. Confidential, although they were both set in L.A. seamy past.

Along the lines of (somewhat) more contemporary seamy L.A. noir, allow me to offer up Devil in a Blue Dress. It hasn't been mentioned in this thread and that kind of surprises me.

That's a good one. I watched it last fall. Another good one is Hollywoodland but it's only available on BD in We-junn Bee.

Glad to see Rififi, the killing and asphalt jungle listed. Criterions editions are great, though I didnt love asphalt as much.

Thank you, I'm on it. My Oppo 103, um, All We-junn, is adept at handling BD Ants, Bees, and Cicadas.
