I just had my Denon DRM700A cassette deck repaired and have been playing tapes.
I bought the deck semi working with intentions on having it serviced, which I did.
The last 3 days is my first time extensively playing tapes in the deck.

I have kept the fine bias (on front panel) set at the middle preset notch position.
I have read through the manual on the deck about fine tuning the bias, which leads me to
    a question.

Is it OK to turn the bias knob and adjust while an actual tape is playing?
Or should I stop the tape before adjusting?

The fine bias setting affects recording only. There is zero effect if you change it during playback. But whereever you leave it set will affect your next recording.

OK thanks for that, going back and rereading the manual on it again, they do appear to be talking about use for recording function. For me, the manual's wording wasn't clear enough to understand it that way for certain. I only use the deck for playback, so bias function won't be of use for me.

Hello Jeff, it's all in the translation into english, you deck has 3 heads, it monitors the recording as it is made. Any adjustments are heard by you, the tapes you use will sound different as you adjust. I personally hate Dolby unless the source is very noisy. Bias adjust is very handy in most recordings to get the best out of the tape recording. Play around with it, trust your ears! Denon makes very nice decks, even though they weigh a little more than a loaf of bread, and have very weak quality...read...cheaply made. My 790R can hold it's own against my reference Teac V-8000S, that's sayin' something.

So your tapes made on a different deck? Or ...(horror's) pre-recorded? Have you thought of recording on it?

Yeah my tapes are 95% prerecorded and it's a mixed bag on which ones sound good, to me they're all listenable in varying degrees. A while back my JVC dual cassette decks belts went, and I decided to upgrade. Enter the Denon. I haven't recorded tapes since the mid 90's, and don't have any plans to do so. I got the Denon so I could play my tapes on a good quality machine.....
I should of went Nak though, hope the Denon holds up.

I got into tapes when vinyl went away. At the time CDs were an overpriced hyped thing.
When CDs became more reasonable, I went CD, but I still play tapes and records.
