Looking at a Fisher 400 receiver. Can buy this around $450. I've listened to the unit and it sounds fine. Seller is not sure if the unit has been restored. Is $450 a good deal? Any advise?

It's a plus if everything is in working order. It will probably still need preventative maintenance.
I'd say that if it comes with the wood cabinet and is in working order, $450 sounds like a worthwhile investment.

Fisher made nice sounding gear in the tube era.

Prices are on the rise for Fisher tubes. I bought a restored one about a year ago for $500, and that was a good deal compared to today's prices.

If there is nothing obviously wrong with it and it looks good, $450 doesn't seem unreasonable to me, but plan on having a qualified tech look it over, just to be on the safe side (literally).

The biggest problem that needs attention is with the selenium rectifier. Search threads and at Audio Karma for info and pictures on selenium vs silicon rectfiers. Recapping is also recommended but replacing the rectifier is a must.

My 800C is the best sounding amp in the house - go for it.

    Agree with the above.
Original, functional tube set is a Big plus.

The Fisher 400 is a sweet sounding receiver!!
Very nice phono section on the 400.

    Hope it works out well.
