I've come to realize that I much prefer the older Tip On jackets that were so prevalent in the 70's. In fact, when I run across an older record in my collection that is direct board printed, I treat it as a redheaded stepchild. I try to love it like the others...but I just can't.

Is there anything more beautiful than a mint gatefold Tip On jacket printed on a 30pt chipboard core? I think not...

For us brits who are used to flipbacks etc, can you explain tip on jackets?
I'm guessing it's the pasted paper on thick card covers but I could be very wrong.

Correct! Thin paper printed and wrapped on thick (sometimes rough) chipboard. Notoriously difficult to keep in mint condition. It's rare to see truly mint examples from the early 70's at used shops anymore, at least where I live...

    I love those covers.
Not seen too often over here, but I always get a buzz when I do find them.

"It's an old-style sleeve where the the cover art is not printed directly on the surface of the cardboard sleeve, but instead is printed on an outer layer of paper. If you look at the back of a tip-on sleeve you'll see where the front paper folds over at the corners."

Me being European, I just love the flip-back jackets. Tip-on sleeves are cool alright, but those front-laminated flipbacks of the 60's... :)

What do you mean - were the flaps printed on the cardboard?

Third Man Records do a lot of tip-on covers

I like a tip on jacket, especially on a newly released record or reissue. It gives it a style and classy look that makes me think a little bit of extra care and authenticity was put into this release. But.. its not make or break for me buying the record.

I also agree that the laminated flip backs and even the immediate post-flipback era (where it was still laminated fronts, but no more flip backs) of British records was classy too.

Light in the Attic also produce great tip-on covers.

I don't get it. I see "tip-on jacket" as a "feature" on new LPs and it appears that these cost more to print. As for me, I couldn't give a rat's hindquarters about these. I'd rather save a couple of bucks and have them give me the direct-printed type.

To each his own, I guess.

I like really nice tip-on jackets personally. I hate the flimsy glossy jackets.

I'm pretty sure LITA's covers, and most if not all tip-on covers printed in North America, are done at Stoughton Printing. See the video I posted above. And I agree; to me, the tip-on cover adds a sense of value to the package.

Yeah, I've read about that company, Stoughton that does the covers. Really cool!

These things that are so prone to ringwear? Love 'em, they made records seem so important. I got the first few JA albums (up to "Volunteers" and excluding "Takes Off") as US originals and absolutely love it.

On the other hand I thought "Muswell Hillbillies" (The Kinks) or "Scott 3" looked better in laminated EU sleeves.
