I searched and could not find much on the album Sinatra & Company, which includes a side of additional songs with Jobim. Sorry if I have missed it. Does anyone know if this was recorded at the same time as the more well known album with Jobim? It has good sound but not as good a performance or song selection. Interesting album anyway.
No. These were (7 of the 10) 1969 recordings with Eumir Deodato (vs. the 1967 album with Claus Ogerman). They were intended for the unreleased second Sinatra/Jobim album which had a few copies make it out on 8-track before being retracted. I'm sure it's been discussed here. The intended album was released on the Concord complete CD: Sinatra - Jobim Complete Reprise Recordings
Regarding the mono mix: It seems to be getting a lot of praise here, but to me it just sounds sort of flat and overly compressed. The stereo is easier on the ears and has much more ambience. I have the original mono vinyl and the 2004 Rhino vinyl (the one cut by Kevin Gray).
This is where Steve recommends the Mono mix as the only mix that gets it right! Just take his word! It's true
He’s right, of course. I pulled out my KevinGray cut and noticed immediately that something was wrong with the vocals and even some of the music. Franks voice sounded distorted. I have a n original mono packed away somewhere, will have to reevaluate.
Really? Maybe it my particular pressing. I checked in to this thread to see if I could find out why I was hearing this on this issue and found Steve Hoffman’s explanation about the struggles to get a good remastering from what there is to work with. Vocals overloading into distortion particularly evident on the stereo issues.
The mono does sound good. But so does the K Gray stereo remaster. No distortion at all on my system. Maybe my VTA is set incorrectly and it takes the distortion out! Anyway, it sounds great to me.
it's a sonic delight for me. it's one of the few records you can put on and almost slip into a deep coma. one of the only records where you just stop doing whatever your doing, and sit back to listen.
“If You Never Come To Me” twice? Was that to stretch the programming time out to be as close to equal as possible?
Reminds me of one of my all-time favorite shows. Dorothy: “I almost want to listen to 8 tracks with you. But we’d have to use Roses’s car.”
I reconstructed that collection with the EOTC, Sinatra and Company and the 3 tracks from the suitcase. What a wonderful collection compared to the horrible Concord edition.
I’m lazy, tired, and don’t feel well so I don’t want to do the searching ... the recent vinyl reissue of the SJ album, worth it or search out an original stereo and mono version?
I picked up an original mono pressing a while back, and it sounds fantastic. It wasn’t expensive either. I can’t speak to the stereo.
I just wanted a quick answer tonight, trying to decide what to burn up some amazon refund credit on .... lol!
Mono highly recommended. Just reading this thread I immediately feel like playing it. Sounds so gorgeous!
