Quite good -- mono mix never (to my knowledge) on LP. HOWEVER -- and it's a big however -- the copy I have is on styrene, which may be true for all copies. I lucked out and stumbled upon one at a "record show" that seemed to be untouched by human hands and trashy styli. I'm sure that many copies are saddled with crunchy distortion due to groove damage. Shop carefully.
Didn’t know about this one. Wow, what a great track list! Vol. 3 has got a good one too. If they were good pressings, it might have saved me a bit of $$ looking for clean Sinatra Reprise 45s. Do you know if all/any the original singles tracks on these LPs the original mono mixes?
Finally got the Reprise 4 CD set for a really low price on Amazon. The book is great and so is some of the music.....
Vol.3 has real bad sound! Great song list, but a big disapointment soundwise. Don't know about Vol.1 concerning the sdound quality but it is very unlike that it has the mono version of Everybody's twistin' on it.
According to @Bob F above, this LP has got the mono version...also, it seems highly unlikely to me that in 1971 or so there would have been a stereo mix created yet of any previously single-only Sinatra Reprise track. Probably not until the suitcase for most of those, methinks?
Yes, might be right. But still don't think it is any good soundwise, because Vol.3 although an official Reprise release sounds like an old mixtape!
Mr. S owned the record company at the time and could do whatever he wanted...(not that he didn't do what he wanted anyway ). To try and jump on the "Twist" craze as others did and also attempt to help out a dear old friend made it a double-doozy.
Looks like a Cycles recording. Definitely Western Recorders. Jeez, they used a LOT of baffles there, huh?
Yes, the date of that photo is reported at MPTV to be November 12, 1968: Frank Sinatra 11-12-1968 © 1978 Ed Thrasher - Image 0337_2443 | mptvimages | Licensed Imagery + Prints This was the third of four sessions for Cycles. Songs recorded were “Little Green Apples,” “Gentle on My Mind” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.”
I wish we could edit posts to correct mistakes noticed long after the fact. That was a typo or auto-correct, of course: “Fats” WALLER.
New York Times : Neal Hefti, 85, Jazz and Hollywood Composer, Dies Caption: “Mr. Hefti, left, with Frank Sinatra, during a 1961 recording session.” Photo was supplied by Neal Hefti’s son Paul, and it appeared in many 2008 obituaries.
Funny, I distinctly remember that obit and the pic then. I guess I was too distracted by the loss of Hefti and reading the obit to notice the coffee cup.
I love the groove and that little part when the horns almost sound like they’re playing the Batman riff. Then again it was arranged by Neal Hefti, I believe, who wrote that theme.
