I ended up getting one from Music Direct on their Memorial Day Sale. It was under $20. Just cracked it open and listening to it now. It is fantastic. Great mastering and silent pressing. Very happy!
Same here. Had to pay extra taxes for customs. All in all: 60,-€ for a DVD/CD plastic case... hmm.- not a box SET at all.
Can't speak for the sound of the DOL releases as I never heard them. But it really hurts just to see the cheap album covers. I once ordered a Tony Bennett "Long ago and far away" and sent it right back just because of the cover art. Didn't even bother to break the seal. For "Swing easy" they don't even use the original cover art but the 1984 Alan Dell series'.
Sad times if you are a Sinatra completest and hoping what you have is worth big bucks. This weekend TWO Brunswick 78's "Melancholy Mood"/ "From the Bottom of My Heart" sold on eBay for veritable pennies...on went for $480 and another for $300. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
As fans are dying off rare Sinatra is not so rare now. The Suitcase was very hard to find a few years back and very expensive that’s no longer the case last time I looked online. peace and love✌Dave
Not as much as you might expect. A decade ago, one went unsold on eBay when the high bid of $602 failed to meet the seller’s reserve price… SFF post: A Significant Anniversary: July 13, 1939 - Page 2 OTOH, one sold for $1,100 just last year (to an SHF/SFF member)… SFF post: A Significant Anniversary: July 13, 1939 - Page 6
@Bob F going back decades didn't a copy of that 78 go for much more than $1,100? Or am I dreaming again????
I saw several for about $100 in 1994, but passed them up. One was framed in a high quality setting that alone would cost $
OK, so that is equivalent to about $870.oo USD today. I'd have sworn I saw copies of that go for over a grand years ago. Thanks.
@paulmock: Could you be thinking of “Our Love”? That sold for $14,000; purchased by the late Vito Marino (to frame on his wall)! SFF post: The first Recording "Our Love" - Page 4
Declining interest in CDs also has something to do with that. The first 78 record will always have value, but high auction prices are not a good indicator of true value
As someone that regularly trudged through eBay and the other sites the last six months looking for a good deal on the Reprise suitcase, copies in average to poor condition came up all the time selling okay. It's apparent that many sellers get them from estate sales and deceased relatives. Probably the most interesting thing I saw was a sealed copy of the non-suitcase Complete Reprise set going for $160.
