Until recently, I only had the three track vinyl version, and I really dig it. Just picked up the lenticular CD version and am excited to check it out - when time permits.

You should find a link for it, so we can see what we all said about it, when it came out.

    *********************************************

“This is Such an Auspicious Occasion"
According to New York promoter Ron Delsener's Carnegie Hall liner note, Zappa and his '71 Mothers – keyboard players Don Preston and Ian Underwood (the latter also on alto sax), ex-John Mayall drummer Aynsley Dunbar and three former Turtles, bassist Jim Pons and singer-jesters Mark "Flo" Volman and Howard "Eddie" Kaylan – only got through the backstage door because Delsener told the venue's booking manager that the boss Mother "was a very accomplished classical musician." Which was true, although the only strings in this band were on Zappa's guitar.

The complete 7:30 and 11 p.m. shows in this box were recorded by the leader in mono with a single microphone and concealed tape machine (probably to avoid union hassles). The fidelity is remarkably clear and full-bodied, even with the inevitable room echo. This is also a rare chance to hear the "Flo and Eddie" Mothers' full range of operatic lunacy and underrated small-combo instrumental drive. An LP-sized dose, Fillmore East – June 1971, had been issued shortly before these concerts; another, 1972's Just Another Band from L.A., had just been taped.

A must-buy because of the following numbers:

*King Kong: wonderful performance and solos by Don, Ian, Aynsley and Frank. Essential.
*200 Motels Finale: very good performance that segues right into...
*Who Are The Brain Police: the hard rock version, with powerful vocal work by Flo & Eddie and an intense solo by Frank.
*Billy The Mountain: the only official complete performance, solos and all. The "one hen, two ducks..." section is remarkable. I prefer the LA performance, but this is one is great anyway. Another essential item in the menu.

With the above songs you already have almost 90 minutes of top-notch Flo & Eddie-era Mothers. Not bad. Fortunately, the rest is generally fine, the Divan suite being the main exception: a complete waste of time (20+ minutes, to be more precise). The Persuasions set is nice, but I hardly ever listen to it.

The sound quality, as the description in the post above says, is really good given the way it was recorded. Clean, undistorted sound (Frank made fake stereo mixes of instrumental excerpts of this show, and they can be found on Finer Moments).

He had originally planned to release Just Another Band From L.A. as a double album, with "Billy The Mountain" split over two sides and the instrumental parts from Carnegie Hall filling it out. When he dropped that idea, he put together Finer Moments but ended up shelving that too. The JABFLA double album also would have had the pseudo stereo mixes.

Other than watching 200 Motels years ago, I've never gotten 'round to the Flo & Eddie era....and given the catchup I've been playing (paying) the past year ~ especially this past winter! ~ with the Project/Object and other vault releases, I can't go smorgasbording at this juncture.

If you could recommend ONE Flo & Eddie to start with, which would it be? Carnegie, perhaps? STIPULATION ~ strongly leaning toward the inclusion of Don Preston, so I guess that rules out Road Tapes #3. Thanks in advance!

Chunga’s is a favorite of mine. I’d probably say Just Another Band From LA though, as a nice intro. Road Tapes 3 isn’t the best sound quality especially in the vocal dept. I’d save that for later.

I don't get the joke, funny or not. Yes, it has a crazy strange title. What am I missing?

Any facts on this bizarre bit of "Flo & Eddie" syncronized dictation??
Was it THIERS?...or, did Frank teach them that?

Thanks for the response and answer to my question. Why do you figure the mono mix was not included on the big MOFO set? I seems like kind of an obvious thing to include on a set like that. Anyway, I did find a nice sounding vinyl rip "available" that I am enjoying now. The internet is a wonderful thing!

The only Road Tapes I don't have (yet). I remember listening to it and thinking "it's ok", and that's all.

Google "The Tibetan Memory Trick" and amongst other esoteric examples of ephemera you'll find this from Flo and Eddie's "Illegal, Immoral And Fattening" album...
