Been trying to rip this disc ABC - 1 but it keeps giving me read errors. CD looks fine, no scratches. I guess the CD is cheap enough I can buy another copy but it is very frustrating. Each time I do a new rip one track or more gives a read error. Sometimes the same track will read fine but error on copy. Other times it is vice versa. I am using an external CD drive but it has copied other CDs fine.

Some CDs will do that, something to do with sector errors. You may try burst mode if all fails. :hide:

I've had good luck using an old laptop to rip cd's when a brand new PC won't do the job. Not all cd drives are created equal. I've even bought another copy of the same cd that wouldn't rip only to have both copies do the same thing. Dusted off the old laptop, and it ripped just fine. YMMV

    I have three
Each behave differently, one older that can detect pre emphsis discs (SUBQ) that I try not to use.
I use a cheapy Amazon external to keep the wear and tear off of it that does a good job on clean discs.

Is the one you linked to a UK PDO? That one submitted has some serious bronzing going on. Not saying it's an issue as I've had no problems with those coppers but it could be deteriorating.
Can you audibly hear any problems once ripped? If not I wouldn't worry about it.

Just tried to rip the second volume in the series, even more errors. Is this to do with it being a UK PDO or just being a budget label? This one is totally bronze but only on the face.
It plays fine but every track is an error. I don't think there is much point in buying them again. Probably again. Oh well it is for my listening pleasure rather than trading or uploading. Certainly beats some awful MP3 copies that I had.

The errors are stemming from the manufacturer, nothing to do with the label.
I have a Dureco Holland Cocteau Twins Blue Bell Knoll that's in beautiful condition but I can't get an accurate rip using three different drives . Nothing audible. No clue what the issue is, maybe some kind of odd offset or something.

Since you're using EAC, make sure you've got the CUETools DB Plugin installed and activated in EAC. When the CUETools plugin is activated, EAC will check the CUETools database to verify rips. The CUETools program has the ability to correct bad rips if there aren't too many errors (about 10-20 thousand bad samples in a rip is about the limit). If the CUETools plugin is activated and you get a bad rip the EAC log will have a section in it for CUETools and will tell you if it thinks it can correct the errors.

Go to EAC >> EAC Options... >> Audio Plugins tab
See if CUETools DB Plugin is listed.
If it's listed then make sure it is selected.
If it isn't listed then you'll need to install the plugin.

An EAC log with errors will look like this. This is a rip I did yesterday of a used CD that has a bad scuff. CUETools was able to correct these errors. After processing the rip with CUETools I ended up with a perfect rip.

    Code:
    ---- CUETools DB Plugin V2.1.6

    If I do not hear / perceive errors on playback then I tend not to worry too much about differs in samples or even the sometimes additional;
If you are sure that your rip contains errors, you can use CUETools to repair it.

    This is one example why (unless I am missing something);
The combined images below are for Jon & Vangelis - Short Stories West German PolyGram cd’s with identical matrices ending 02.

Top: Purchased in the late 1980’s and has been pretty well looked after, that is to say it still plays without errors, or so I thought (was / is this wrong?).
After running the cd through EAC and noticing differs in samples along with the footer message thought it time I had better compare with another 02 copy.

Bottom: An identical West German PolyGram 02 matrix edition.

Is there a rogue ‘bad rip’ in the database that should be removed or do both my copies contain the exact error which I do not hear (last time I checked)?

    Apologies for the blurry screen-grab

One I did last night took almost 7 hours!
I have noticed most of the CDs with errors have a UK PDO. Coincidence. This was also slightly bronze too. Again I can hear no errors but maybe it doesn't sound as perfect as a new CD? I don't know

    Here is the log.

I don’t have the particular cd and according to discogs the options for a non UK PDO edition appear nonexistent,
you may however get lucky and find Silver editions amongst all the bronzers if sellers are willing to answer the question.

As noted before on the forums the bronzing can first appear and become critical from the outermost edge
spreading inwards which would correspond with your listing above, T18, 19, 20 being the first affected.

Fortunately for many affected cd's there are (trouble free) equivalent pressings available from alternative manufacturing plants of the period.

    Good luck.

Jon and Vangelis – Short Stories (West German / German Polydors)

So I think I understand where the ‘differs in samples’ arises with Jon and Vangelis – Short Stories, matrix 02.
I mistakenly thought that the Polydor matrix 800 027-2 02 would be compared exclusively with other 800 027-2 02 editions in the database.

It seems the late 80’s 02 edition is also being compared with the earlier Red Faced (83) and Silver Faced (84) editions
both of which have a very noticeable glitch (drop-out including a click) during ‘The Road’.

On the 02 and Japan (92) the click is not present, that is to say I do not hear the click
although there is perhaps evidence of a very slight adjustment (repair?) which would pass by without notice but for EAC.

    12 second samples from a Red Face 01 – Silver 02 – Japan 92 combined into one WAV file;
    Dropbox - The Road Rf01 Ag02 Jp92.WAV

The Silver Faced 01 is as the Red Face

The glitch (the click part) is reminiscent / similar / the same as the one on The Dark Side of The Moon cd editions.

My CD/DVD started misbehaving after years of good service - the problems seemed to be related to a Windows 10 upgrade and one second hand CD with damage to the metal layer. I managed to rip the CD using a cheap USB plug in CD/DVD drive. The longer term solution was to replace the troublesome drive with a Plextor.

I've only come across one CD I couldn't rip. That had a crack all the way through but I still managed to get a couple of tracks off it. I use dbPoweramp rather than EAC.

For secure mode ripping have you properly detected the features of the drive being used and set the "Drive caches audio data" correctly?

That is to be expected. The AccurateRip and CUETools identify discs based on algorithms that are based on track count, total time, and maybe individual track time, and maybe gap times. If a two CDs have the same track count, total time, and track times, and gap times then they are going to be identified as the same CD. Even if each is a different mastering. Even if one of them has a digital glitch corrected and the other does not. And even if they happen to be different albums from different artists that just happen to have the same track count, total time, and track times.

The CD ripping programs and rip verification programs are not reading the engraved matrix numbers.

This is the reason for your read errors:

    Compact disc bronzing - Wikipedia

I have both volumes of these ABC compilations from Pickwick and had the same problems. I had to acquire several copies of each to find bronzed, but still rippable copies.

Bronzing always only appears on the face side. Actually any kind of damage to the face side is much more dangerous than damage to the back side, as face side damage often means irreversible damage to the reflective layer!

That's weird. Here's a screenshot of my EAC options dialog with the Audio Plugins tab.

We're both old enough to remember doing all this ripping stuff when V1.0 was new. :magoo:

Those UK PDO discs that have bronzing can be a big problem with EAC as well as other ripping programs. I've had them rip error free only to listen back to the files and find a ton of dropouts or "blank space". The best thing you can do if you're having problems with bronzed discs is to find alternate copies that are not pressed at PDO. Often there is another edition pressed in a different country at a different plant with no issues.

I’m having this issue right now. Bought a NM graded disc off discogs but of course, it’s a 1987 PDO pressing and you know what that means. Gotta send it back now. Oy.

If you’re able to re-read particular tracks accurately some times and not others, don’t be afraid to re-rip those selected tracks individually. You’ll have an appended log but it will not affect the quality of your rip itself, if you’re eventually able to accurately extract each track. Try different read modes for different tracks. Burst mode can work wonders once your drive gets up to speed.

If you have an absolutely identical copy of the disc, that may also be problematic in some areas due to being a PDO pressing, but maybe some more tracks are good, and you can grab those individually as well. This goes in general for any CD, not just PDO pressings.

As for PDOs.... any tracks close to the edge are gonna be tricky. That’s where the rot sets in first. Some longer albums very well may be impossible.

One of my personal holy grail discs is a PDO pressing. There’s only one confirmed copy and it’s not known if it was a planned retail disc that was canceled, or just made in extremely limited quantities, etc. It makes me sad to know that no good rip of it is extant and there may never be one. I wonder if there’s a way to chemically strip a CD and re-silver it? Would all the money in the world not be able to save this recording?

Good advice, just make sure you do gap detection properly each time, otherwise your multi-session rip may be off. IIRC the gap detection numbers vanish if you close the program or open your optical drive. The other thing is too long extraction times can fry your optical drive.
