I tried to resuscitate the previous Gary thread, but it appears to have been archived. At any rate, I wonder if there is much interest on the board in the music of this brilliant young composer/ conductor/ arranger/ producer whose life was tragically cut short in 1971. I've been voraciously collecting his albums and CDs as I come across them. (Every record store in the area always seems to have at least a few of his LPs in stock. Maybe I've just been fortunate?) The phrase "musical genius" is often tossed around, but I really believe Gary McFarland was exactly that. His music resides in a world of its own, where all boundaries between jazz, pop and classical are torn down. During the years he was active (roughly 1959-71) he was highly prolific, leading session after session, both with acoustic big bands and smaller electric/ acoustic combos. He was also a producer of some renown, working with Gabor Szabo, Cal Tjader, Wendie & Bonnie, etc. Anyway, this is a thread to discuss Gary and all his music, on Verve, Impulse, Skye and beyond! Any and all input welcome.
