What are your least favorite tracks on the 70s Genesis albums (up to and including And Then There Were Three)?

    Beginning with

Battle of Epping Forest (Selling England)
    Robbery Assault and Battery (ToTT)
    All In A Mouse's Night (W&W)

Crimson jon, Pennywise and BeenAround like this.
  2. Battle of Epping Forest (though musically it is pretty good)
The Return of the Giant Hogweed (sacrilege, I know)
    Get 'Em Out By Friday
    Squonk
    Your Own Special Way
    Snowbound
    The Colony of Slippermen

  4. IT (The Lamb) (a weak ending to the story)
Battle Of Epping Forest (Selling England) (too wordy/long)
aside from those two, I like everything else

W&W is the loser here: Your Own Special Way and All In A Mouse's Night. If they'd only used Spot The Pigeon tracks instead...
ATTW3 would be next, but nothing from that reeks like those two.

"Your Own Special Way" is the only song I genuinely hate. I blame Rutherford for this one.

I'm rather lukewarm on "The Lamb" as a whole but can't pinpoint anything to jettison. I'd give "Supernatural Anaesthetis" the boot but then you lose that cool Hackett solo at the end. Maybe "Ravine" or the song where the bird steals his dicky.

Still can't understand why Steve Hackett revisited that one in 1996.

The Return of the Giant Hogweed is one of their best tracks

Actually, Back in NYC hasn't aged well, now I come to think of it. Conversely, I now see the formerly feeble Chamber of 32 Doors as a bona fide classic.

Sorry, but 'Battle of Epping Forest' is a masterpiece (imho).
It's a long song (just the way I like my Genesis) and has some of the best Gabriel-era lyrics ever recorded.

    "At the break-in of day.
When the limos return for their final review, it's all through'
    - all they can see is the morning goo.
"There's no-one left alive - must be draw."
So the Blackcap Barons toss a coin to settle the score."

The music is pure prog with lots of time changes, fantastic performances by all the musicians, and great little 'ditties' that weave in and out of the song.

But, back to the subject at hand, my least favorite 70's Genesis. (not many, they're all listenable)

    The Lamia
    In The Rapids
    Stagnation
    Scenes From A Night's Dream
    Say it's alright Joe

Yeah, I'm with you on IT, not a bad song per se, but definitely a weak closer compared to the rest of the album. Epping Forest, I can never make up my mind on that one...

THE RETURN OF THE GIANT HOGWEED???? WHAT??? IT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST GENESIS TRACKS!!!

In my humble opinion, obviously. The worst of Genesis? Hmmm... I have to go with And Then There Were Three. Aside from the first two tracks and the singles, I just cannot for the life of me get into this album. And I have tried. Many times.

I don't like some of the revered stuff from the Gabriel era such as "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" or "Get' em Out by Friday"

I like "Epping Forest" better but it is too long as others have pointed out already.

I don't like some of the stuff on "And Then There Were Three" such as "Say it's Alright Joe", "Undertow", "Burning Rope". It's not horrible but possibly a little boring.

"Grand Parade" I don't like too much either. "It" falls short as closing number, but it's otherwise OK.

The reprise of "The Lamb" in side 4 is cleverly constructed but its a bit like a one-time joke. "The Waiting Room" is filler.

  20. Likewise, 'The Lamia' was always a standout for me too. I always pictured Rael having sex with some snakes when this was playing. Teenagers and their fertile imaginations, eh?

'Epping Forest' - embarrassingly bad lyrics and those silly East End skinhead accents as imagined by ex-Charterhouse schoolboys. Cringeworthy.
'Your Own Special Way', 'All In A Mouse's Night', just twee.
'Squonk ' I always thought this one plodded, just boring to me.

I listen to Nursery Cryme through The Lamb on vinyl pretty regularly, and there's nothing I have to power through, but the songs I don't like as much as the others would probably be:

    Hogweed
    More Fool Me
    Epping Forest
    Liliwhite Lilith
    It

What, even the driving instrumental coda following the dry toilet flush? I may add that The Musical Box do a version of this that truly ROCKS!!!!

I kind of dislike 'More Fool Me', sounds a bit like some of the cheesy stuff they did after PG left the band.

I'm surprised at the lack of love for It, I think it's a great end to the album.

I do like the instrumental coda but the preceding noise section is too long and I find it derivative of stuff such as that instrumental piece (On the Run?) on Side 1 of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side..."
