Any fans of this 2001 flick here? I caught this for the first time this week on IFC (Independent Film Channel) and got interested in it after tuning in to it about midway in the movie (but caught it all on DVD-R the following day). Anyway, it stars Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi. I haven't seen it enough times to give a good description but Thora plays a young bored high school graduate who's friends with Buscemi's nerdy, loner, 78-rpm collecting character (much older of course). At first she wants to set him up with someone ("leave everything to me and by summer's end you'll be up to your neck in p*ssy") but in truth she's actually interested in him herself. All through the film there's great dialogue and small touches the director put in that just make it a very entertaining film. Plus, a scene with some hi-fi jargon dialogue about the merits of vinyl vs. digital transfers!

I think there are definitely some oh-God-please-tell-me-that's-not-me moments for audiophiles and music geeks in GHOST WORLD (and HIGH FIDELITY).

Me! Not only do I love the film, but there are times when I pull out the DVD just to watch the "Gumnaam" music video. Hot stuff!

Is this supposed to be a "music" movie?

Is that the TV music show she's watching that opens the film, and the song repeats over the closing credits?

There is a great scene where a Seymour is showing off his original copy
of Skip James "Devil Got My Woman" to Enid. She pretends to drop it and
    he just about loses it.

In another funny scene, Seymour has some friends over to his apartment
for a party and tries to sell a seasoned collector a rare, expensive 78 in
less than mint condition. The guy inspects the disc and then says something
along the lines of "Seymour, you know I don't buy 78s with off-center holes
    and tight cracks!"

The shirtless Nunchuck guy is hilarious too.

Your post cracked me up! I liked the convenient store owner/boss in a couple of those scenes -one where he is trying to fight off numchuck guy with a mop.

Big fan here. I had a charter subscription to Eightball. My other fave was Hate. I thought there was also supposed to be a movie adaptation of Pete Bagges' Buddy series. That's one I'd really like to see.

Well, you're close, Rich. It is the opening theme Thora Birch's character is dancing to and you see a snippet of it on her TV screen, but it's not a TV show. It's a scene from an Indian film from 1965 and it features a combo called Ted Lyons and his Cubs and assorted dancers. I learned about it from a Bjork forum where someone thought the lead female dancer looked like her. Well, maybe, but all I know is I think it's wild! It's accessible through the "Special Features" on the disc's menu.

    Me. I love this picture.

Wanna notice some clever performance miming? Watch the "Jaan Pehechaan Ho" music video. Notice that the main theme is a kind of James Bond riff played on Duane Eddy-ish electric guitar. Then look at the musicians on stage. Three acoustic guitars strumming rhythm.

I'm not criticizing- I think it's funny, adds to the charm.

Another fan here. Music is just one element of real culture being smothered by mediocrity that the film critiques - television, suburban sprawl, Starbucks and the 'service industry,' the 'in' crowd - all get their knocks in hilariously accurate fashion.

The record collectors party scene is a classic. I about freaked when one of the bands being discussed as they haggle over the condition of the record is my real name(!).

Re. the numchuk guy ('Rock n' Roll Baby! Freedom of Speech!') ... while there are two outtakes of his scene in the extras, be sure to watch to end of the credits where there is a bonus scene with him :D

Great movie. I think the line actually goes "Seymour, you know I don't buy 78s with enlarged holes and tight cracks!"

From what I recall Seymour and the collector are fussing over grading details for a particular record, while Thora's character is around. Then when the collector walks away, she asks Seymour 'what was all that business about enlarged holes and tight cracks?'.

Something like that. Cool movie :).

I'm another fan. I like the scene with Thora in her bedroom listening to "Devil Got My Woman" for the first time.

I will never completely love a world where so many go gaga for a Pamela Andersen and so few know / care for a Thora Birch.

    Anyway, a great little movie
