How is that so hard to believe? There are plenty of examples of "polar opposite" directors in American culture, as well.

I was sort of kidding. But the stylistic extreme in Japanese film is quite extreme

Yeah Pacific Rim had interesting characters in it, plus more action. All Godzilla had was Bryan Cranston acting like 'normal man' and some others I really can't remember. Wasn't there a big fat lizard or something in it?

There is a lot of art in the first Godzilla film (Gojira, 1954). The scores of Akira Ifukube alone make the Godzilla series worth mentioning when talking about Japanese cinema.

The characters obviously didn't make as much of an impact on me, because I don't recall caring about *any* of them.... and "more action" does not a good movie make.
Pacific Rim was actually the first of Del Toro's films that I actively *disliked*.

It's not his best I agree but it was still head and shoulders above the snoozefest Godzilla. I remember being more entertained by the Robocop remake on the flight home from Canada. I watched X-Men Days of Future Past, Live Die Repeat, Robocop and Godzilla on the flight. Godzilla was the least entertaining.

    Different strokes and all that...

Not derailing but is RoboCop remake any good.. Enjoying The Martian-Matt Damon(Andy weir book) which I might also pick up.. Godzilla gets a lot of flack but I grew up watching Rubber suit versions and will always have a soft spot for him.. In-fact wasn't happy when he was killed in emmerichs Godzilla..and why didn't Son of Godzilla happen.. Idk? Movies.. Point Break remake...Ray Winston... Ooh great!?

Actually it's not that bad. 7 out of 10. They at least took the time to change the plot enough to make it worth a watch. Not a great movie but not bad either.

The Robocop remake is infinitely more boring than the Godzilla film.

Tbh if its not as good as Verhoevens Original which was very dark and very cool @tha time..then its not for Me, and I'm kinda more forgiving of Godzilla Movies.. Now Carl Urbans Judge Dredd.. that I enjoyed..and it doesn't look like we'll be getting a sequel anytime soon... Shame.. Was hoping we'd at least get one more with either ABC Warriors or tha Dark Judges..

Sometimes I come to a Movie knowing nothing about it and it turns out to be really good, some very good.. seems a lot of remakes are not so good for one reason or another, mind some were Screaming for a Re-make/Re-boot.. For Me(just my opinion, like) but M.B. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was way better than Tha Original and miles better the the next/new generation whatever it was called with Mathew McConaughey/Renée Zellwegger.. Now tha was bad!! I might give Robocop a try..i dunno.. Maybe.. Can't remember if I've said but The Martian is really good..

IMO, Godzilla was just too dark! I would have liked to see more of the star...
...for me there is no re-watch value here, but I'm glad I watched it just the same...

The trailer for the new Japanese Godzilla: Resurgence (2016) film is out. It looks like they're taking a cue from the Gamera films (as well as Batman v Superman) and showing more of the death and destruction from the human POV.

I know some people have complained about the new Godzilla design, but I really like it. It finally makes Godzilla disturbing again. My only criticism is the tail is too long.

I like the long tail. It looks pretty impressive in those scenes early in the trailer going over the houses.

It's lovely to see that my favorite sake-swilling atomic lizard is coming back once again. You go, big fella!
