Someone posted in the Fargo thread mentioning this show. I love Gomorrah, which appears Wednesday nights on the Sundance channel. It's like The Sopranos, but without the humor. The show is dark, more so than Breaking Bad. No one has any redeeming qualities as they fight to control the drug trade in Naples. They are all corrupt and doomed. Some great acting, great characters.
Fantastic show! You can buy it on fandango. Looking forward to season 3 which I think is out soon. It's very loosely based on the book and movie of the same name. Interesting thing I read, the show is broadcast with subtitles even in Italy since all of the actors speak Neapolitan. Naples is really the star of the show, such an incredibly brutal place , at least as portrayed here.
What's amazing to me is that the movie and the TV series are telling 2 totally different unrelated stories and yet they inhabit the same universe. There's an unmistakable air of authenticity to these tales. This place actually exists. IIRC, the author of the original book has had a price on his head placed by the criminal families in Naples. I find it to be so raw and hard core, great stuff!
One of my favourite TV shows ever, I recently bought the season 1 & 2 Blu-Ray Box set and watched them over a week, compelling viewing
So....I just saw in Netflix that season 2 has just been added of this amazing series. Just giving you guys a heads up on a very superior program! I've said it before, it ranks with all the great crime (Mafia) shows and movies. In Italy, the show's a major beast, more popular than Game of Thrones (Trono Di Spade)! Season 3 premiers over there in Nov. so probably won't bee seen here 'til 2018, grrrrr......
Recently re-watched season 1. Enjoyed it SO much more the 2nd time around. The transformation of Genny is an acting tour de force by actor Salvatore Esposito.
I'm surprised there is not more talk here about this show. Truly great TV. I'd love to know how many people have been killed and rounds fired over the course of the two seasons.
