The reviews are terrible on quality control for that Graceland album, but I can't tell if they're referring to the CD or the LP because the reviews are combined.
If anyone purchases Radio City I'd love to read a review. I purchased this a few times back when it was released in 2009 and every pressing I got had the worst sibilance I've ever heard on vinyl. Four years later someone on Amazon left a review titled "Oh My SSHHHHHoul!! Bad Pressing!", so I'm not holding my breath.
While I realize it can be expensive, my first, and only copy is the Classic Records version. It sounds unbelievable !!!!!! Big Star - Radio City .
When the Classic was released, the Concord that came out shortly afterwards used the same stampers. Not sure if it's been recut since then...
Good to know. People are always going to complain about sibilance on Big Star records. My Ardent copy of Radio City sounds exactly the same. Take it away, and everything will be really dull. Best thing to do is have a cart/tonearm that can handle it better. That's eventually what I had to do for a number of records that I own (Many Chris Bellman cuts, including Marquee Moon, in fact!).
Yeah, these Big Star records sound like crap. They sound like that on all pressings, including the original Ardent pressings. They are shrill, and if people were being objective and not muddied by their love of the band or new vinyl, they'd be described as ear bleeders. All of them. Some are worse, but none (including the Classic Records version IMHO) is really good.
The Classic Records is the best of the bunch. Thankfully, my love of music transcends all audiophilia. I'd rather listen to shrill releases of music I love than settle for something that doesn't thrill me.
As always, the ear of the listener, and the equipment he is using to listen, play a BIG part in these back-and-forths.
Of course. The main point I was trying to make had nothing to do with the quality of this particular release. There's been plenty of back and forth on the Big Star releases anyway: big star classic concord site:stevehoffman.tv - Google Search Carry on.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures $15.84 https://www.amazon.com/Pleasures-180-Gram-Vinyl/dp/B00XILAIWI White Stripes - Icky Thump $16.95 https://www.amazon.com/Icky-Thump-Vinyl-White-Stripes/dp/B000RIWB16
FYI, you can filter the reviews to show just one particular format of a product. Looks like a lot of complaints about skips. Which could be bad or could actually be good. A lot of people have crappy TT's or don't have them set up properly so they can't handle a dynamic LP. Remember the RL version of LZ2 got pulled because it caused skipping...
Like I said, there are plenty of threads debating that. I ventured off topic and I’m trying to lessen the noise that I started in this thread!
Maybe so, but that doesn't make the whole black/white duality any less absurd. You get credit though if in fact you are trying to lessen the noise!
Right, after taking a closer look it does state whether it's vinyl or not. Not sure I'd take the chance on it.
