    "Silent Running" (1972)

I enjoyed this film quite a bit. Bruce Dern and the his interactions with the "drones" is very good.

Although she didn't write the score, a few sequences are ruined by badly out-of-place Joan Baez songs.

If ever a film had an overwrought score that, at the same time, is one of the most memorable things about it, it’s Taxi Driver. :hide:

And that’s one of my 10 favorite movies of all time, btw.

I didn't like the music in Black Panther, but loved the movie.

Not enough Africa Bambataa more lion king. Maybe that was the film's selling point.

Dr Zhivago. That theme tune really grates after a while.

Lethal Weapon suffers from in-your-face music through every action sequence.

When I read the title of this thread, that was the movie I thought of.

The Commitments at first, but then it gets better.

I first saw the movie on its first release, and found the song(s) (isn't there just one, but repeated?) haunting and appropriate to the mood of the film. That opinion has stuck with me. But, if I saw it for the first time today, I might or might not think otherwise.

Hitchcock's The Birds. It's so low in the mix you can't even hear it!

Can't remember all of the tracks but Rejoice In The Sun was a beautifully placed track on this film IMO, I love it.

That masterpiece "Casino Royale" from 1967 was superb and had such a wonderful, solid plot-line. Too bad it was marred by that awful Dusty Springfield number "The Look Of Love" and that awful theme song by the Tijuana Brass. Lousy fidelity on those music tracks really marred a wonderful movie.

John Huston's Wise Blood. The soundtrack consists of multiple variations of Tennessee Waltz which gets old quickly.

Hitchcock's Torn Curtain would be far better remembered had he not ditched Bernard Herrmann's relentless, throbbing score for a limp John Addison trifle. Addison's later work for Mel Brooks also drags those films down.

A recent example I think would be Thor Ragnarok - great use of the Immigrant song, but Mark Mothersbaugh's synth score could not have been more inappropriate or out of place. Mark - the 80's called and they'd like their soundtrack back...

But that was clearly intentional. The whole movie has a goofy/wacky vibe and the throwback score was a part of that...

Fair enough. When Guardians 2 did the disco thing, I got it. This one went over my head. I just sat through the end credits thinking MM had really missed the mark. Maybe I had had my fill of silly at that point. Mea culpa!

    No culping necessary! :D

"Ragnarok" is a big, over the top slapstick farce, so intentionally dated/silly music makes sense.

I honestly don't even remember the score! I was too distracted by the dopey stabs at comedy, I guess! :)
