I think it was this thread that got off into a tangent about Robyn Hitchcock. Anyway, this story is about Garcia: "Here's Rob Morse's 3/16/89 San Francisco Chronicle item about Jerry & Bob at the R.E.M./Hitchcock show (via The Golden Road #19, Summer 1989): "Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead attended the concert by R.E.M. at the Oakland Coliseum Tuesday night. At one point a young security guy in a blazer marched down the aisle, stormed up to Garcia, whom he obviously didn't know, and shouted: 'Put that thing out!' And Garcia put out his joint. 'I thought Jerry Garcia had a license to smoke dope,' said a stunned onlooker, 'like 007.'" Hooterollin' Around: Jerry Garcia Concert Attendance 1961-90 @bzfgt
Now, now; she's not evil, she's just....misguided. (sorry Jono))) I had to get a dumb joke in, I'm sure she's womderful)
lol, ironically, that must make Garcia one of the few concertgoers at the Oakland Coliseum ever rebuked by an usher for smoking a joint. It's literally unheard of, in all my days.
For those who want to experience this thread title literally, go check out Let's Spend The Night Together from 11/21/90, JGB at the Warfield, a solid AUD just released at the usual places. This is going to my 1990 reference point for just an out of the world Jerry guitar solo/performance.
It’s an Audience recording and definitely sounds like one. Hope the Garcia folks have this one in SBD quality in the vault.
I finally am playing the vol 10 on my home rig( previously only over phone at gym). Holy %*#*-what a big warm open great recording of a must -have performance. Now I am really, really hearing this show in all its magnificent glory. ( Yammy 3000 and Lascala)
I got hassled at the Roger Waters show in 2007. Bay area venues are pretty lax about it general but sometimes that staff can get a little overzealous.
heh, never mind...on consultation with the group, I'm in agreement with the consensus that Garcia isn't playing on that cut. Don't let it put you off of auditioning it, though.
Sometimes it's just one staff member. I remember a Phil Lesh show at the Orpheum in Boston where the whole crowd was basically lighting up but this one security guard decided that goddammit, nobody was going to smoke in *her* section!
At Sound Summit last summer (featuring Bob & Phil) which is held at a rudimentary outdoor amphitheater on the side of Mt. Tamalpais ("Tam"), they wouldn't allow joints because of forest fire concerns. They didn't even want you vaping, but people did on the down low, here and there. But after they'd announce this, they'd say, "But edibles are fine, people!"
That's a great question. I get the impression the policy was to ban all concert goer-imported heat sources. The seating area is all rock and dirt, so it would be hard to start a fire even if you dropped a flaming out of control joint. Not that I've ever seen one. "Dude, I hate when joints spontaneously combust." Fires start easily out here because it's so dry. I didn't know what Steely Dan were talking about when they sang "Here come those Santa Ana winds again," but I figured it out after I moved here. Down south, they have winds that start fires.
4/30/92 at the Warfield, nice Don't Let Go in set II followed by Gomorrah, during which Jerry busts out the slide for the last time through the final solo! I wish he had gone around a few more times times with the slide, but even that little bit (less than 60 seconds total?) was very sweet sounding, and got a nice reaction from the audience.
Certainly an uneven album but Midnight Getaway is really good (along with the title track and Valerie). Good bonus tracks on the box set version too.
