How big were Grand Funk overseas? Did they ever do a big tour in their prime outside the US?

  2. I have had the 30 Years of Funk 3-CD set for a long time, I get it out and listen to a few songs every few years. I think GFR was better than their reputation but with thousands of albums in my collection, GFR just can't get much play.

Mark Farner, and it was April 15th, 1998, at the Ryman Auditorium, not the Tennessee Theater.

First off, I know that it's Mark 'Farner', not 'Garner'...that was an obvious mistype. Your correct about the 2nd concert of theirs I attended was in '98 and not '97, it was 6/17/1998 to be exact. But it was at the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, TN. ;)

Great story about the Time Square billboard. I may not have the details perfect but it was supposed to be up a month but the billboard workers went on strike and it stayed up several months at no additional charge to the band. Grand Funk, in their day no one rocked harder.

Grand Funk's I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home remains one of my all time favourite songs.

They were quite well known in the uk. Pete Townsend once reviewed one of their singles. Can’t recall which one. He said he liked them.

    Survival.
1971. 12 years old. Still remember Mom driving me to a suburb of Chicago, on a Saturday morning. She had some shopping scoped out there for the house, maybe for herself, but doubtful. She knew there was this great record store right there on the same block.:hugs:
Also can no longer remember if I knew it had been released, or if it was a surprise. Either way, I was happy. Still have it !

Right now, it's the SuperMasters I'm playing : Grand Funk Railroad - Survival
hands down, the BEST version I've heard since that 1971 day. :agree: All 3 boys get a fair amount of spotlight, and it's crystal clear, unlike that original vinyl, which has it's murkiness.

    The red album is fantastic.

Unpretentious meat and potatoes rock band, that's why I like them

And as a 14 year old seeing them in concert about the time of this album's release, it was a great rock & roll show.
