I have a copy of the American Band album I purchased several years ago, still sealed. I was told that it was a gold vinyl copy. I've never opened it. I'm pretty sure it is one of the original releases. Is there any way to tell whether or not is is the gold version? I'd love to know, but I refuse to open it. Thanks for any help.

There are several gold vinyl versions including several more recent gold vinyl releases not on Capitol. The label and catalogue number can tell you if it is a newer gold vinyl release as opposed to an original Capitol release. Check Discogs for those versions. If it isn't Capitol SMAS-11207 it's NOT an original Capitol.

I'm not sure how to tell if an original Capitol is a gold vs black vinyl version without breaking it open. My memory (fleeting) from way back in the 1970's is that it had a sticker on the front designating it as gold (or maybe yellow) but that was 45 years ago and I'm old and I've slept since then.

It would have to be the metallic gold cover for starters. Both gold and black vinyl came in these covers. They switched to a matte gold cover later and that definitely had all black vinyl in it.

If it's gold and no one ever sees it does it matter? What about the stickers? I once bought a sealed copy that said stickers included and they weren't there.

Correct. You can easily by a mint gold/yellow original vinyl for under $30. Just open it!!!

With no internet in 1973, my 15 year-old self didn't know how many copies came yellow, and I wasn't mature enough yet to keep the stickers, without applying them to something back then.
Still have it though, as I did always treat the records themselves with the utmost respect.
I have added the CDs of the Japan Pastmasters, the 2002 reissue, and the AF 2010 gold plated reissue.

Go ahead and open it, you're not about to get rich with this one. Yellow, or not.

Open it. There’s only one way to know if you have one of these.

If it's a foil cover - and you leave it sealed - then sure, it's yellow!!!!:wiggle:
But if you crack it open, and it is yellow, it will be worth a few dollars more than just leaving it sealed.
This title is so prevalent that I don't really see the desire to keep it sealed, not big bucks either way....but that's just my 2 cents.

I already have a yellow vinyl copy that's opened. Guess I'll just leave this one alone. It is gold foil cover and correct catalog number. I also have a sealed 30th anniversary DSOTM album that I bought when it first came out, again, refuse to open it. I'm OCD that way.
