1st show of a new year with new material is always good. 2/9/73 is like that, too.

I put it in the top handful for sure. A magical quality to the show. I love the Matrix that Hunter Seamons made of it where you can hear the audience speaking in between songs. Worth a listen if you haven't checked it out yet.

It just occurred to me that the upcoming solar eclipse is going to occur on 8/21/17, 45 years to the day of their massive Dark Star at Berkeley Community Theatre on 8/21/72. Notwithstanding the desire for a boxed set from that run, it would make for a nice and appropriate August '17 pick.

Not including the soundtrack to Long Strange Trip, it will have been exactly a year since the last released show with a Dark Star (Dave's 19) when 23 comes out. The only thing I'm pretty sure of is that DP 23 will have a Dark Star on it. And if they indeed have begun shipping them, it's probably going to be announced this week.

Strangely enough, I think in a perfect world, discs from an unknown show would show up at my door on an unspecified day. I like surprises. Of course, I won't stop checking this thread to find out what I'm getting as soon as possible.
The only advantage of finding out early is so that I can move my listening away from the surrounding dates so that the era will sound fresh.

That being said, where's the announcement already!?!?!?!?!!

  8. gosh, i wish i wasn't so eager to know each release. i buy my sub every year, and enjoy whatever I'm sent, but it'd be great to be discipline enough to not peek, get the package, not even look at the cover, put the first disc in, and let it ride, trying to guess year/tour. it'd be like having a time machine. I might just have to go offline and take that approach.

Seriously. I do always restrain myself from looking at the setlists to have some surprises, but in terms of not knowing the show itself? That's next level ****. Maybe someday I'll be there. :^)

Yep! Pretty much due for more Brent in general. Only 2 Brent shows out of 22 releases is a bit out of whack.

I'm all for '79 too. Be it with the Godchaux's or Mydland doesn't really matter. I like the winter and autumn shows both.

Yep! And don't forget the Spring shows which are the only ones in Brent's early years to feature Jerry on Wolf!

Like my only show (5/11/79) which I can't remember anything other than they didn't play any of the songs I liked from the early studio & live albums I knew!!! But they DID play Mama Tried, Brown Eyed Woman & Bertha!!! But I know I wanted to hear China Cat>Rider. Of course I had no idea they barely played that at that time.

Plus there is more to the back-story which had something to do with late second semester Freshman year @ U Lowell, being broke, angry, behind, upset, etc.

One day I'll share it here:)
