Don’t forget “28” August ‘68, at least some of which is surely from 20 August ‘68.

The Watkins Glen soundcheck jam was released on So Many Roads.

The jam was released, but not the entire soundcheck. Great Birdsong that night.

Just listened to the jam the other day for the first time. Very interested to hear what came before & after. Very invigorating last 7-8 minutes.

Isn't the released version missing a couple minutes? I don't have the release, so I'm not sure where I got this idea...

Yes, it fades out. Tragic. The whole performance should be released. The Summer 1973 Stadium Series Box Set.

Oh, the stuff it's missing is at the end? That's really weird, I wonder if it's due to some issue with the source tape they have. It would seem more likely to cut a little of the beginning--not that this should be done either--as it takes a little while to really get going but unless I'm remembering wrong they are cranking away at the end there...

The circulating SBD does not fade out, it continues through to Wharf Rat.

The whole sound check show is worthy of release, but certainly the jam is delightful.

Yes, I realize that, that's the only version I've heard.

Can we reserve words like "tragic" for things that are actually tragic?
So Many Roads was a box with a lofty idea of representing a 30 year spanse of time. It's objective was not completism.
Though I do wholeheartedly agree that they need to do a summer 73 stadium box.

Cutting out part of a song is different than casting a wide net for repertoire, keeping in mind that releasing it in this form probably renders null the possibility of ever (in the foreseeable future) releasing the whole song...

I don't see why the Watkins Glen jam inclusion on So Many Roads would preclude a release of the full 7/27/73 soundcheck.

Inclusion on So Many Roads didn't prevent these shows from being released:

2/27/69 (That's It For the Other One)
    5/11/72 (Chinatown Shuffle )
    8/27/72 (Sing Me Back Home)
    3/22/90 (Scarlet>Fire)
    3/29/90 (Bird Song)

Plus the jam out of Foolish Heart (9/18/90 part of a Road Trips release)

Also the songs that subsequently appeared on Birth of the Dead

Yeah that may be so, my thought about that is that the jam is the most widely known and lauded part of that show and taking it and releasing it by itself is probably perceived, at least, as reducing demand for the rest of it. This may not be so. Anyway, I'm not the one who used the word "tragic" (I don't know the SMR version anyway) so I'd be happy to be wrong about that. But note that of the songs you list, only Scarlet>Fire is the meat of the show in which it appears.

Even if what they released was an instrumental improv and not a song. :agree:

Right, I'm not too worked about that distinction although I'd probably usually say "track" if I were referring to a recording, but I've never liked "tune." Maybe "number" once in a while.

Indeed, I'm delighted and heartwarmed that this music is still speaking and glowing to youthful hearts of all ages, that the ears to hear just keep on coming. :nauga:

KC Whistle, that's a great disc (4). But don't forget Hey Pocky Way from Greensboro. That's the 2nd set opener for that show I finished my paper two hours before :pleased:

For sure! The second and third discs are of course great, but the fourth is perfect for someone like me who has limited patience for the ‘80s. I’d say it’s the most important disc of the set for me, but stuff like the Dark Star Jam>Spanish Jam>US Blues basically taught me how to listen to and love jam segments, so I guess that’s a big deal, too.

Disc 5 was better this time around. I didn’t even mind Eternity and Way to Go Home all that much.

16 March 1973- Nassau. Thanks to the praise heaped on this Dark Star by all y'all, my esteemed colleagues hereabouts, I am being amply rewarded by a proper listen. Muchos Garcias.
