Plus in addition to that awful sound, he simply plays TOO much.

As the links attest, their '67-'68 lineup was defintely conceived in homage to the Airplane's, although their initial repertoire (lots of Dylan, Buckley, Farina etc.) was a bit more solidly folky than the psych-politics of the Airplane of the period.

Of course, they went on to become a very different band, from Sandy Denny's joining onwards...

I absolutely love DaP 18 so I am excited for this. Really exploratory, still can’t understand how that release does not garner more attention. Also Listened to the Cow Palace NYE and it is fantastic. And the bonus disc Spirit of ‘76 is over the top phenomenal. Love that 76 comp!

Don't overlook the depth of the Airplane's folkie roots. Paul Kantner and Signe Andersen were pretty much coffee house folkies, and High Flying Bird and Other Side Of This Life were staples of this scene. I see a lot more similar intent than direct influence.

I like Brent's Dyno-Rhodes sound. I just don't like that on the PA-mixed tapes, he's LOUDER THAN ANYONE ELSE. I like the plink, but when it dominates the mix like that it can be a little over-bearing.

True enough on the roots thing - I suppose the point being is that, by 1967-68, the Airplane had already advanced on a couple of years from that mindset, whereas Fairport were still in their formative, "what's our sound" phase.

Cow Palace is definitely in my top 10 list as far as "pick this show at random for a good time" is concerned.

Literally a perfect setlist for my taste (except that there is no Franklin's Tower, lol) and the versions are excellent.

Truly one of the most underrated official releases, imo. :)

Thing is, there is a very fine line between the plink of the toy piano and the more satisfying resonance of the wooden bars of the (digital) marimba.

  10. Was 50’s on 5 XM and the catchy hook got stuck.

Frank Zappa's 1988 arrangement of Big Swifty agrees with you :)

I was there, and didn't think it was all that great (for the time, it was certainly better than many post-Brent shows I saw). I was very worried about Brent's health after watching him on the monitors at that show. I've never gone back and re-listened to it though, so it may grow on me upon further listening. Foxboro '89 (which I didn't attend) seems better by quite a bit to me.

they were a few years apart/younger similar pollination but different paths. FC wasnt or even aspire to be or become the monster psych/rock band like the JA , seem more alt folk/ rock. Went through americana which itself was part olde england back to olde in liege and lief? The airplane landed by volunteers and the hot tuna offshoot went back to the country with the proto starship back in psych/ rock territory?

Yeah, we are firmly, firmly back in doofus skeleton territory here. Excited for the music though, I know the 6/14, 6/15 and 6/18 shows well, but somehow don't think I've ever heard this one.

I gave up on the artwork a few years ago, sub par at best.

That's where they first appeared, I'm pretty sure, although suppose it's possible there is some earlier show poster or blotter sheets or something that I'm not aware of.

Hey, look Ma, no skeletons (the dual stealies and Dave's banner don't count).

Also, Pigpen's 'Gator cousin hanging out at Thelma Station on Dave's 10 was great (notice - no skeletons):

I just looked again, it was actually exactly a dozen, out of 84 shows. You have to have seen 8 or more those to beat @jazz_case.

Agreed, I love the Gator one, I think that's Tony Millionaire, who also did the Drinky Crow show on cartoon network.
