Love Al Jackson Jr. he made those Al Green songs really jump. Although Howard Grimes did a great job in Hi Rhythm, Jackson had a magical touch and an energy that Grimes couldn't quite touch.

The first person I thought of was B.J. Wilson from Procol Harum. One of my favorite drummers ever.

Grant Hart of Husker Du. Not the best, but he influenced my playing immensely. I forsook my hi-hat and went totally to the ride cymbal because of him. That and those 'machine gun' rolls he always did from the snare to the tom. Mix that with Moon and you got my playing style.

It looks like he took 6 pages to get a mention, but I'll post him again because he was awesome. RIP

Jim Bonfanti of the Raspberries, and his replacement Michael McBride. I find it hard to believe no one looked them up after the Raspberries demise. Both were powerful rock drummers.

My favourite jazz-rock drummer is Lenny White, if only for his work Return To Forever. He had that expasive Cobham thing going on, blended with strong funk. His interplay with the other guys in the band was awesome.

I think he was at his peak on "Romantic Warrior" (1976) as well as the other members of the band. One of the greatest jazz-fusion albums ever: a masterpiece !

I am neither a drummer or musician, but it seems Jody Stephens - Big Star deserves consideration.

Great drummer. Not really forgotten, he was just playing with Corea, John McLaughlin and Victor Wooten at the Blue Note in NYC a few weeks ago.

I find that album a little too contrived and much prefer the three that came before it.

I'm happy to see anyone from Gentle Giant mentioned here, but I dunno that I can agree with you that Mortimore sounded technically superior to Weathers. That said, I never quite understood why other band members said he was weak based on the recordings, but they would certainly know better than we would. It could have been that it took him a long time to get those takes down as well as he did.

I only heard Television's Marquee Moon album for the first time recently because my band was going to play a live cover of the title track. While learning the drum track, it occurred to me that this was a band playing punk-ish new wave music while the drummer was playing as if he were in a jazz or prog band. As a prog fan myself, I couldn't help but appreciate that. This gave me inspiration to use a similar style in our punk-ish band. If the guy from Television could do it, it's thereby justified!

  22. Did they say that? I guess that's likely (time to nail down the tunes vs. what we hear on the album). He blows me away during the guitar work-out of "Peel The Paint"... I've never heard John play like that!...

I just remember them saying something along the lines of the first two drummers not being strong enough for them and Weathers came in and blew them away. They weren't specific about what it was that Malcolm didn't do well.

Most people are aware of Marky's work with the Ramones, but before that as a teenager he was in the hard rock band Dust. And here he plays in a very different style than he is famous for.
