Both blues and non-blues. I mean players who played slide often, not only once in a while like Page, Clapton & Beck.
Usually when one mentions slide guitar, the same names pop up - Robert Joihnson from the old days, then Elmore James, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth and Derek Trucks, and if they want to impress, they add Ry Cooder or George Harrison. Here is my liost with names besides these guys

Bukka White - great country blues artist with a second career in the 90s - check out Aberdeen, Mississippi Blues as an intro

Tampa Red - the first king of slide for me, Mr. Smooth. No Tampa - no Elmore James. He also went electric in 47. It hurts me too, Dont lie to me a fave of Albert King) are songs he recorded first.

Son House - praised as a vocalist mostly, but he was a unique slide player, mostly using his licks for powerful rhytm embelishment.

Robert Nighthawk - started acoustic, then went electric. Influenced by Tampa, but had more of an earthy style.
He popularized Sweet Black angel, which became BBs Sweet Little Angel, BB also adapted his Crying Wont help you, while Elmore James did Annie LEE Blues.

Kokomo Arnold - great technique, fast aggressive licks, even if not too variable

Muddy Waters - his arsenal of licks was a bit limited compared to quite a few others, but they are classic. For his best live slide playing check the album Hoochie coochie man - a live concert from 1964.

    Part two:

Earl Hooker - B.B. King said he played the most beautiful slide ever. Great technique, supper smooth , also the first player I know to combine slide with a wah wah pedal.

Al Wilson - listen to Canned Heat live at Topanga Corral - smooth and soulful.

Ron Wood - great style, earthy but also lyrical enough.

Manny Charlton (Nazareth) - the greatest heavy rock slide guitarist in my opinion, listen to tracks like Vigilante man (influenced by Ry Cooder), Bad Bad Boy, Woke up this Morning, Guilty or May The Sunshine for starters.

Chris Rea - very unique, lyrical style, overall less blues based licks than many others - listen to Road to hell and others for starters.

Dave Hole - if aggressive blues is your thing, he is tough to beat.

Foghat's Rod "The Bottle" Price doesn't get mentioned much anymore, but he was a fantastic slide player, with great tone. He's very underrated IMHO.

By most music magazines/best ever lists, unless they are what I would call specialized publications - especially blues based ones.
Reading most of the first type, most people who never go any further probably think the blues started with Robert Johnson and there was no one noteworthy before him.

But aren't they supposed to be forgotten, as per the OP?
Haha, naw, I'm a big LF/Lowell fan. Slide player, composer, singer, he was the real deal, a minor genius.
Too bad he had some sorta hellhound on his trail, but maybe that's part of where his inspiration came from.

Yeah Robert Nighthawk and Earl Hooker both played in Standard Tuning.
My other favourites Hound Dog Taylor and JB Hutto used Open D (ish :)).

Plus I guess he's forgotten because I keep thinking I know this guy with a famous name, but I can't think of it.

    Roy Rogers !

Um, music magazines, whichever ones are still alive, will focus on the current pop confection, flavor of the day.
Don’t take them seriously as anything.
    Best ever lists??.
    That’s something done exclusively here

Unless I've missed something, Sonny Landreth seems to have been forgotten so far.

And... David Lindley (not always slide, not always guitar, but a great slide player).
