The Ides of March were a deliberate soundalike for BST, much as Spiral Staircase were for Chicago.

I could never get used to the fact that "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number), at least the first section, sounds nothing like the Beatles...I'm not sure who it does sound like

We've had many variations of this thread idea and I always mention that "Expressway To Your Heart" by the Soul Survivors is very Young Rascals like.

If you squint your ears :D the lead singer sounds like Felix Cavaliere.

Mogwai's Christmas Steps sounds a lot like a specific Slint song (Nosferatu Man?), but it's still one of the best things I've ever heard.

"Wonder Wall" by Oasis sounds like the Mott the Hoople filter was generously applied.

I just watched this on youtube. It's very Journey like and the clip screams 80s with the Bon Jovi hairstyles and wind machines. Survivor also seemed to model their sound on Journey with songs like I Can't Hold Back.

I always thought Pete Barden's Whisper in the Wind sounds like it could have been a mid-late 70s Fleetwood Mac song.

A lot of John Stewart songs as well, such as (Odin) Spirit of the Water.

I always thought "Remedy" by The Black Crowes was the best Stones song the Stones never recorded.

"Born Free" by Kid Rock is the best song Bob Seger never wrote.

On the Dark Side - John Cafferty & Beaver Brown Band - a blatant Springsteen rip-off but a song that still caused a lot of volume controls to be cranked way up back in the mid-80's

All the Young Dudes - Mott the Hoople - the chorus on this always sounds like it could have easily been a really good Beatles record

Skeleton Key by The Coral sounds a lot like Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band. The band did it as a homage, and it's evident they really studied the records (particularly Doc At The Radar Station). The vocals, guitar and bass are good, but what really makes it is the drummer, he's playing a very Drumbo-esque beat.

:shake:I'm surprised no one has mentioned America - Horse With No Name. People still think its one of Neil Young's better tunes

The first time I heard 'Back Of My Hand' by the Jags, I thought it had to be a new single by Elvis Costello!

If someone told me this track by Condello was an outtake from Moby Grape's debut LP, I'd believe them:

Dramarama's "Haven't Got a Clue" also sounds as if it went through the Mott-ifier:

Back to the Midwest Night by Arlyn Gale sounds like it's picked up a couple of stylistic hints from Bruce Springsteen (specifically Thunder Road), but it's far from a clone and it's a magnificent song in its own right:

I don't know if this qualifies as a "great" song, but it recalls Neil Young.
