I'm making myself a compilation of songs featuring my favorite basslines.

Anyone have any personal favorites or suggestions of songs to include on my compilation?

    Some selections:

White Jam - Captain Beefheart off of The Spotlight Kid. The opening bassline hooks me everytime. Not that great of a song as a whole but the first 1 minute is fantastic

Is This It - The Strokes. A more modern selection. One of the craftiest basslines I have ever heard.

    Anyone else?

"Baby You're A Rich Man" The Beatles
    Deep and cool.

"The Ballad Of John & Yoko" The Beatles
    Deep and cool.

Lots of Led Zeppelin tracks. John Paul Jones played the bass as if it were a lead guitar. Great bassist.

"Start Me Up" The Rolling Stones
One of my favorite Bill Wyman performances.

"Sloop John B" The Beach Boys
Carol Kaye with a pick...nice clicky sound. I love it!

    "Massachusetts" The Bee Gees
I've always liked Maurice Gibb's lines in that song. Very nice.

    "Stop Stop Stop" The Hollies
Simple and repetitive, but really nice. It drives the whole song.

    "Sparks" The Who
Just about every line John Entwistle ever played was great, but this is one of my favorites.

    "Reflections" The Supremes
There's tons and tons of great Motown lines, just one of my favorites. Pick your poison.

    "Eight Miles High" The Byrds
    Great stuff.

I could go on forever, but I'll stop here. I'm sure you'll get plenty. :)

    Some more Beatles:

    - "Taxman"
    - "I Saw Her Standing There" (try playing this one AND singing at the same time - if anyone dare needs proof of Macca's genius, that's it!)

    Non-Beatles:

"The Real Me" - The Who (and pretty much any other John Entwistle bassline)

"She's Not There" - The Zombies

"Moondance" - Van Morrison (yeah, I know, it's just standard jazz stuff, but it fits PERFECTLY--then again, I suppose it's 'cause "Moondance" really isn't a rock song... it is jazz.)

"Reach Out (I'll Be There)" - The Four Tops

    "Green Eyed Lady" - Sugarloaf

And then there was one other one which I thought of and then forgot two minutes later. Oh well. Somebody else'll probably post it and THEN I'll remember. I've got THE worst short term memory

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Good Times" by Chic yet! That bass riff created by the late bassist Dr. Bernard Edwards we the one Brian May borrowed from for Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust". Not only did Queen use it, but a small record label in Englewood, NJ used it for a new rap group. The historical song? "Rapper's Delight". If that wasn't enough, Wayne Vaughn used it in his disco/rollerskate classic "Skate, Rock Roll, Bounce". Want more? INXS used a variation of it for "Need You Tonight".

Another great bass line is the one on Rod Stewart's "Crazy About Her" played and produced by...Dr. Bernard Edwards!

Bassist Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson played some mean bass in their 1976 hit "Get The Funk Out Ma Face".

I always felt that Paul McCartney was way unnderrated as a bassist. He did outstanding work on "Paperback Writer"

The Staple Singer hit "I'll Take You There" had the groove IN THE POCKET! If there had been no lyrics, or anything else, that bass could been the whole thing and still grooved!

AWB's "Cut The Cake" also had a killer bass riff.

One more, for now, "Snapshot" by Slave. Steve Arrington's bass can't be beat there.

If you're into metal, Iron Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera" from their self-titled debut has some excellent basslines. The bass pretty much plays the root of whatever the guitarists are playing, but there's no denying that that main riff (the opening riff) is some excellent riffing indeed. Steve Harris = underrated genius
