This certainly wouldn't qualify as one the "greatest bass lines of all time" but in my opinion it has to be one of the coolest bass "sounds" of all time.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich - Hard To Love You

Dozy's (Trevor Ward-Davies) bass sound in general was very cool on their early records but this one really jumped out at me the first time I heard it.
He started off playing a Gibson EB-2 bass but then switched to a Fender Jazz Bass which is heard on this track.

'Taxman' by the Beatles, 'Strange Days' by the Doors, 'Thank You', by Led Zeppelin, 'Josie' by Steely Dan, to name a few. What I love about the bass is the melodic propulsion it can provide. Yes indeed, I actually AM all 'bout that bass.

I ended up following this lead and discovered that Chuck Berghofer (The Wrecking Crew) was responsible for this classic bass line. The story goes that he "lifted" it from a song on James Taylor's 1974 album, Walking Man. Does anyone know which song?

  11. Dave Pegg - 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' from the Cropredy Live 2008 performance with mother and daughter vocalists Chris and Kellie While.

Stunning bass lines throughout from Pegg, playing his 5 string bass.

There is a version up on YiuTube from 2008 but it's not a very good recording. The official one is well worth seeking out.

    Best Wishes,
    David

No way I'm reading 40 pages of this stuff but page 1 cites at least 3 songs by Yes but not "Long Distance Runaround," which bassists I've known like above all others by Squire.

Other great bass lines/performances: Tom Fowler's work on Roxy & Elsewhere (especially the side starting with "Village of the Sun"), Jaco Pastorius on the title track of Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life, and Milt Hinton on Branford Marsalis' "Doxy" from Trio Jeepy:

I could only like that post once.

He's got several. He played that crazy thang on Rock On by David Essex, the slinky double bass on Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed, and also on Bowie's Space Oddity. And he's currently playing double bass in a standard jazz situation. Not a household name, but a really original cat who's always had it going on.

Did the bass make it a hit. Or was the song so good the bass just fell into place. What's. Your favorite, if you don't like my picks write in your own!
