Hope you CCed the Band and Mastering Engineer a copy. How can people listen to that?

I just listened to the [strike]sound[/strike] noise clip of this at the Matador Records website. I think it is the best example yet of what clipped music sounds like.

BTW, while the term 'matador' is used in Spanish to mean bullfighter, its original definition is 'killer.' No more explanations are needed, right?

I just downloaded 'RIP'. For a good simulation of the sound quality, simply take your CD player, and connect its line outputs into the microphone inputs of your cassette deck (if you still have one). Record something from the CD to a tape in this manner, and you'll have what I heard from their clip at Matador.

If this isn't an April Fool's joke, I think we ought to start differentiating between waveforms and blockforms...

As a GBV fan, I take offense to this.

That waveform image should be the textbook example of how not to master an album.

That's not loud and distorted rock music, that's incorrect digital processing. Anybody can set levels wrong on anything.

Perhaps someone should suggest to these folks that they quit goofing around with this pretentious "low fi" stuff. Go back to the real thing. Cut 78s only. A wind-up acoustic Victrola is actually very loud and real low fi. Although there is some risk it could be an improvement if they're not careful to do poor work with that technology too.

If people didn't innately desire better sound, we wouldn't have advanced and made the progress they are abusing.

    IMHO, fwiw, so on.

I think it has an early Velvet Underground feel to it.
However it is SO distorted I'm not able to listen to more than 30 sec.
At 57 with failing hearing I still like loud,it just has to sound good, this did not sound right.
    Now back to Martin Denny.................

So do I. Rob Pollard could do more with a four track tape machine than most people could imagine. Sure, the GBV stuff was lo-fi, but it was easily listenable. His combination of great writing and basement recording resourcfulness made for some real gems.

Sad that this noise is compared to GBV.

Would make a good band name for guys releasing stuff like that. Have to agree with anybody else here - I can stand some clipping (rather not, though), but this is downright unlistenable.

That other MP3 sample (Drop-out) sounds (only slightly) better, though. Their own website is currently unavailable, but when you open their Myspace page (see the link), you'll be greeted with an almost equally crappy-sounding noise. The signals are way up in the red zone almost all of the time.
