Hate to break it to you, but ultimately that's why every movie is made.

Some are made for art, educational purposes, commentary on the social, economic and political environment; many are made for both the love and money.

Most- more accurately, all movies made in Hollywood with this kind of budget are made to make a profit,-- in this case, Disney is milking the cash cow.

As much as I hate the idea of this pointless spin-off ,will probably be foolish enough to the first one in line at my local theater, because of my irrational love for Star Wars... and I do like Ron Howard's movies... he seems like a generally nice guy, and in this case,it helps.

Don't feel real compelled to see it, but because it's pedigree I will. I did not really enjoy Rogue One at the theatre. The amazing thing is I loved it when I watched it a second time at home. So, I need to keep an open mind.

Why would someone who loves un-commercial or art films even be doing paying attention to news about Star Wars movies? Unless maybe someone were claiming it's great art/literature. To quote the host of the new Gong Show "this one's just for funsies".

They give loads of publicity to all kinds of films, if you can't tune out hype by now...

I think one can appreciate artistic non-commercial films, while at the same time love Star Wars, if that someone grew up with the original movies and is feeling nostalgic.
So far, the recent films have been a good, fun ride, but question this movie, and all the future spin-offs Disney has planned.
Turning off the hype is very good advice...

The difference is "Hey I have this idea for a movie, let's figure out how it can make some money" vs. "We have the option to make some money, what kind of ideas can you come up with?" This film (and a lot of Hollywood fare) feels like the latter, a very cynical thought process.

We need a lot more Buster Keaton and a lot less corporation owned and controlled multi-platform-marketing properties.

But... there is almost always something tasty in every kind of junk.

In all sincerity, that may have been more satisfying than the film. I love Lobot as the DJ.

Even though I've enjoyed the last two films, I don't know what to think of this. But in fairness, I'll keep an open mind, and know things could be FAR WORSE

I wonder if Disney's Solo will be the kind of guy that shoots first?

    Adjusted for inflation...

55 million in 1978 would be over 208 million in 2017.

Well in Rogue One, Cassian kills one of his own informants to silence him. That was kind of a shocking thing to see a Star Wars "good guy" do.

That sprang to mind as I wrote that question.

The Han shooting after alteration was always dumb. With him shooting first it brought along a little more character arc to Han.

Superman was crazy expensive for '78. I'm amazed they spent that much on it (and never felt it looked all that great, to be honest). An inflation-adjusted $208 million budget isn't all that crazy in 2017 though. Looking at the domestic Top 10 grossing films so far in 2017, here are the budgets:

Beauty & The Beast: $160 million
    Wonder Woman: $149 million
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: $200 million
    Spiderman: Homecoming: $175 million
    It: $35 million
    Despicable Me 3: $80 million
    Logan: $97 million
The Fate Of The Furious: $250 million
    Dunkirk: $100 million
The LEGO Batman Movie: $80 million

Superman - inflation adjusted - would come in at the high end of that, although to be fair I think some chunk of that budget was spent shooting Superman II as well, wasn't it? Before the studio took the sequel away from Donner and gave it to Lester, who had to reshoot a bunch of it.

Probably a good idea. Hopefully one day we will get a documentary about the film we never saw...
