Although I've owned CS7-ES2 and SHL5's, the M40.1's have always been the dream...some day I gotta have em. Found the right deal I couldn't pass up. The best I've had top to bottom...does everything well. Don't need no stinking subs anymore either!

Wow...great set up. Those are beautiful speakers. Are those the same stands your SHL5's were on?

Let me know if the link below works OK...I'm using my iPad from a hotel, and not sure if I'm embedding the links ok. Should be public access.

    Thanks for the nice comments.

Yes, they are the SHL5 stands. I was gonna get Skylan stands again, but have been giving consideration to Resonant Woods and HiFi Racks (UK), one or the other in cherry wood. Might just go with Skylans, since I really like the way they perform loaded down with kitty litter, and the color matching with the black gear rack.

My SHL5s and Skylans are for sale on Audiogon, btw.

I do use a sub with my M40s. The frequency response of the M40s drops off below about 40-45Hz. The sub fills in that bottom octave, giving flat frequency response all the way down. It does make a difference.

The 40.1's are +/- 3 DBS down to 38KHz. I ran subs with my SHL5's for 4 years, and that gave them the big sound that sounded really good, but I'd have to say it probably wasn't exactly flat response from the sub to the SHL5 woofer. The 40.1's sound so coherent without any spikes anywhere, and they play pretty deep...I hate to mess with what strikes me as so tonally correct, with such excellent timbre. They sound nice and deep as it is...I do plan to experiment with it, and see how it strikes me. I am not crazy about passing the signal through whatever cheap crossover is in my SVS subs. It might sound ok with the low pass set at the lowest setting, without using the crossover, but I'd bet it will mess with the perfect coherence.

Think I just missed the link the first time. Awesome room and gorgeous speakers! I can only imagine how great that set up sounds.

I wouldn't use the crossover. And yes, a lot depends on integrating the subs with the mains. I use a DSPeaker Anti-Mode 2.0 for room correction and the results are astonishing. Flattening the bass down to 20Hz clears up the midrange as well because of phase effects. It's worth experimenting with IMO.

Very interesting. Can you point me to a good source of information about DSpeaker?

Congrats! I would like a pair of the 40.1s as well. I am so pleased with their little brothers, the 30.1, that I want more ;)

Inspired by your example, I tried to get a photo of my M40s. Here is the result. It's a near-field setup, so I had to make a panorama. The room is actually rectangular. ;)

Awesome! I have to tell you, I've not been this tethered to my music room in a long time. I'm always looking forward to a long listening session. A bunch of JJ Cale right now!

What kind of amps do you drive the 40's with, since you're listening in nearfield?
