I'm curious about these 15" coaxial drivers. What do they sound like?

Time for a nine-years-on bump. These were pretty influential and well-respected speakers back in their time, and cosmetically quite lovely. I think at one point all the RCA studio facilities had these. Some pics of some of the cabinets that are floating around out there:

And the "classic" that always come to my mind, at least:

Looks like you need some real estate for those big boxes - they remind me of tv cabinets from the 50s.

Very nice in this cabinet. I'd love to hook up my mono Fisher 500 to it. That would be sweet!

From RCA Studio B in Nashville - Bill Porter, Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins.
I wonder if those playback cabinets have LC1A's in them?

Judging by the picture directly above and the RCA studio shot, the cabinets look like they contain the same drivers (note the rectangular cutout directly below the woofer). The cabinets look similar, save for the legs under the floor speaker.

When I was at WBAA (Purdue Univ) in the 1970s and 1980s, we used them in the control room, the studios, etc. I think we even had one at the AM transmitter site. The were OK sounding, not great by the standards of the 1980s, but certainly pretty good considering the era from which they came. The ones in the studio were driven by McIntosh amps with push-pull 5881's, IIRC.

What do the controls on the right side of the cabinet do?

Nailed it. Pleasant but in no way worth stupid money. Not in a league with a good DC Tannoy or a good 604 setup.

Timeline-wise, what do you think? Heavy use on RCA sessions from, what....1953-1964 or so????

Don't know, but they were quite common until about 1982-84 in older facilities. They were one of the first items the sharks bought up and exported.

None at RCA, Hollywood (new building). At least, not in 1972 when our class visited the studios. All Altec VOT. Urggh, did they screech.

I'd venture a guess those RCA's were the polar opposite of screech...

Not just RCA studios, but CBS, as well, as evidenced here, regarding CBS in New York: History of CBS Records 30th Street Studio NYC (many pictures)

Those look like air filtration systems or air conditioners.

Perfect speakers to go with some Philips Double D getter EL34s driving them.
