There's much about how video's have helped artists, but have you ever watched a music video, performance, interview, or read a print article (or both, for that matter:winkgrin:) that has either turned you off of someone you'd liked, or disgusted you so much that you never gave a fair chance at all?

I'll start: Arctic Monkeys. Based on Lead, Alex Turner. Now, I think I might even have liked their music (not counting Tranquility Base ...; heard snippets of that only b/c I know someone who likes them & was curious- having heard, or read- that it was unlike previous material; not my type music at all. Neither is The Last Shadow Puppets - I listened to something of theirs b/c I Do like Miles Kane & despite A.T. being in it, wanted to hear. I'm sticking w/Miles Kane...either solo or his first band, The Rascals. Both - aces!:edthumbs: When Pandora might stream anything that I suspect might be Arctic Monkeys, I'll go there to skip it or give thumbs down, that's how much I dislike Alex Turner. (I don't know what, exactly, my protests are doing!!! but I feel justified doing 'em)

I'd caught interviews probably around '14-'16. Between the slicked back "Greaser" hair & the snarky attitude the guy just exudes, could not bear. :disgust: He also reminds me of Sean Penn. - Another super-overinflated ego. Since his attitude ruined any A.M. music, I can't really address whether or not he is that good.

I'm sure I"ll hear disputes; that's great for discussion & everyone's entitled to have their favorites.
Let's also just remember to post regarding the thread title.

    Here's 1 interview example:

Morrissey in too many interviews to mention, for reasons that are pretty obvious.

And as much as I agree with her stance on animal rights, Chrissie Hynde, for having the diplomatic skills of a buffalo.

If you were in the UK in 1976 the music press turned many people off the bands they were gently growing old with, a list too long to remember.

Now that that rush of youth has dissipated we can return to the same music safe in the knowledge that we're more mature and sensible now(?).

  7. I have found most musicians are only best heard singing or playing, other than that silence/mystique is golden.

Oasis...just the smugness. Liam especially. I've tried and gave the music a chance but it's mediocre

Yeah...Ted "a-hole" Nugent, who said “Obama, he's a piece of ****. I told him to suck on my machine gun.”

The Dancing in the Dark video was the first time I ever saw Springsteen.
Since then (and it took many years) I’ve come to appreciate some of his music but I’m still not a fan of Bruce.

He is sort of like one-man public service warning about the dangers of cocaine abuse.

The other thing that chafed with Oasis, for me, was the seeming desire of the UK press to hype them. I felt there was a huge desire for some Brits at the time to kid themselves into believing that then-current groups like Blur and Oasis were genuinely on par with Kinks, Beatles, Stones, whoever, when clearly they were not. I'm not saying they shouldn't be given credit for what they did achieve, but the hype definitely made me like both those bands less.

I went right off the Who and Pete Townshend when he was arrested and put on the sex offenders list for buying and downloading child pornography .

Opened this thread specifically to make this very point. IMO, Nugent is the best/worst example.

To be fair, did Nugent ever come across as an educated or intelligent person? I mean the above-quoted comments highlight his absolute ignorance more clearly, but I can't imagine anyone ever looking to him for wisdom.

He didn't download any child pornography, as the ensuing investigation bore out. He did use his credit card number to access a site, to illustrate how shockingly easy it was to access such material. He admitted this in an essay he posted on his website called "A Different Bomb?" which was written, in part, as a reflection on a close friend of his who had been molested as a child, and who had recently committed suicide. This essay -- and Townshend's admission therein -- were on his public website for nearly a year prior to his arrest.

He owned up to the fact that what he did was stupid and irresponsible, but maintained he didn't view or download any child porn (again, as the investigation proved). In the immediate aftermath of his arrest, a child-welfare organization in the UK publicly excoriated Townshend; they then had to embarrassingly backpedal when it was pointed out that he had approached them a year earlier about the horrors of how easy child porn can be accessed, and they'd brushed him off. There was also a "classic rock" station in Wisconsin (I believe) that made a sanctimonious stand about not playing Who records anymore...until people pointed out the many banner ads on the station's website for "barely legal teens" porn sites.

In short, you can go back to listening to Townshend and the Who, because he didn't download any child pornography.

I rarely read musician biographies because the less I know about the artist’s personal life the better. I’ll stick with books that focus on the music.

To be fair, I hated Ted long before then. Actually, I kept my old stuff. He hadn't made anything worth listening to since Carter was in office, anyway.

U2. I'm still a fan of their music, but anything they do outside of music gets turned off very quickly.

I regret reading Cynthia Lennon´s biography, ´John´. I was really shocked afterwards. Not only because of his treatment of Cynthia but of Julian. That was something I wasn´t aware of. I mean, I knew he wasn´t a good father to him, he said so himself but.. yeah, like when John said to Julian that he hated his laughter and told him never to laugh again in John´s presence.

But I still listen The Beatles and John Lennon. I´m still a big fan. This was just a very unpleasent read.

How about Social Media? Not going to name names, but there is a band that, theoretically, I should really enjoy, but their namesake member posts on a forum I go to regularly, and reading his responses to some members has completely turned me off from ever wanting to listen to anything he's involved with. Nothing massively offensive, I have to say, but rude, condescending, meanspirited...

You guys are complaining about Ted Nugent? Let me introduce you to someone: Varg Vikernes - Wikipedia

(I still like a lot of Varg's music though!)
