I've been thinking about this question a lot lately in reference to Radiohead in particular. Nearly twenty years since their sonic left turn with Kid A, many older fans still bear the band a grudge for not continuing with the original guitar based alt-rock sound that they led with in the 90s.

Have you ever felt frustrated or betrayed when a band that you really loved radically changed their sound? Maybe it appeared that the band was watering things down and "selling out" by embracing a more radio friendly sound. Or maybe, as in the case of Radiohead, they seemed to become more self-consciously difficult and inaccessible. Is it reasonable for fans to impose these kinds of expectations on a band or is it better to try to judge each new release on its own terms?

Also kind of glad Radiohead does whatever they like.

    Disappointment isn't betrayal.

For me, that's kind of what defines them as a band. Most of their albums have represented a change of approach from its predecessor (excepting Amnesiac, Kid A's sibling release) and yet they still all sound like Radiohead.

I like variety in music. music styles, singers, songwriters within bands.
Which is why I think I am more drawn to bands like Queen, and the Beatles. everybody contributing their writing and vocals.
But sometimes even my favorite bands go in directions that I may be a bit disappointed with but not betrayed ( hot space, yellow submarine) but I do appreciate the variety and the willingness to try different stuff. would be boring if they followed the same direction all the time.

Myself, I actually like artists who do what they want to do rather than doing what I may want them to do.

One of the greatest quotes I've heard was, "I like an artist who makes albums I may dislike". :)

But I always keep that in mind. When I think of some of my all-time favorite songs or albums, many are a result of an artist not making an exact repeat of what they did before.

If artists did not do something off the beaten path, I would never have had the pleasure to enjoy the following:

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
    Revolution 9 :)
The 1978 Solo Albums - Kiss
    Unmasked - Kiss
Music From The Elder - Kiss
Their Satanic Majesties Request - The Rolling Stones
Sketches Of Spain - Miles Davis
The Soft Parade - The Doors
The Great American Songbook - Rod Stewart

    And countless others...

Actually, I'm more likely to drift away from a band that doesn't deviate from the original template in some way. Hell, even Lemmy picked up an acoustic once in a while. I'm not looking for bands to necessarily go all Jazz Odyssey but if they won't even take a lead from the base they're on, it gets kinda formulaic.

That makes me think of something I heard a DJ say 0nce on my local radio station, KEXP. "If you like everything you hear on this station, we're doing something terribly wrong."

Does any band embody this evolutionary spirit more than Spinal Tap? From their original blues based sound up through their psychedelic experimentation and the ambitious conceptual opuses of the 70s and on to their leaner, meaner metal sound, they were continually challenging their listeners' expectations.
