Please list HDCD titles without Peak Extend My Panasonic F87 plays HDCD but does not support this. Why? Neil Young? Bad Company?
I never heard of this. I'm under the implression that if a CD player has the HDCD symbol on it it decodes all of the HDCD features.
Don't forget that many HDCD discs have absolutely no peak entension whatsoever. I mean: nothing more in terms of dynamic range. Most of mine for instance. Many threads about that.
Panasonic F87 operating instructions: This unit is compatible with HDCD, but does not support the Peak Extension function. (A function which expands the dynamic range of high level signals)
Yes, HDCDs that use peak extension are few & far between. While it's true that a HDCD-capable CD player will correctly decode HDCD discs, on most of those there is no additional information in HDCD mode. If you rip the waveforms on most HDCDs, you will see that the HDCD-encoded wave is identical to the non-HDCD, just several dbs lower in volume. On the HDCDs that use peak extension, additional dynamic range is gained when played back in HDCD mode.
The Grateful Dead HDCD's (at least many of them) have peak extension. So do the Neil Young HDCD's. Not sure about others, but I wouldn't call the ones which use peak extension "few & Far between".
I have 9 HDCDs. Of the six I "decoded" in my computer, only two have more dynamic range than the CD data.
That sounds like a description of a normal non-HDCD player. It seems to be just saying that the machine won't detect the HDCD peak extension but, like all CD players, it will play any HDCD discs that you may have.
Yeah that may seem to be the case, however during HDCD play "HDCD" lights on the display. I would hope there's something else going on besides "HDCD" lighting on the display.
Even if an HDCD disc does not use peak extension, the HDCD "subcodes" can contain instructions for the decoder to change filter algorithms on the fly. The changing of the filter algorithms is one of the main features of HDCD processing.
Yes, this is all new to me too. Could someone please outline the drawbacks to playing HDCDs on a regular CD player? I had thought that the only difference was in fidelity, not in compression or other areas. Also, I asked in one of the AF threads if the new AF CDs would be HDCD with peak extension, but haven't got a response yet. What about the prior AF CDs? Do these have peak extension?
I got my fingers crossed, as I don't want to have to get a HDCD compatible player. (less money to buy CDs)
When I play peak extended HDCDs in my regular CD player, they sound too loud. This is why I hope that the upcoming AF CDs do not have peak extension.
I don't think any of Steve's HDCDs use peak extension. I'm guessing that the majority of pop/rock HDCDs have it in order to make them louder on non-decoding players.
The latest Grateful Dead Dave's Picks release does not have peak extend. Neither does the bonus disc.
I see quite a few of Kevin Grays titles are HDCD...even one that doesn't contain the logo turns on the HDCD light on my player. I don't think HDCD is dead yet ! It's still discussed on many forums including this one ! A few companies are releasing some stellar HDCD's.
Most Neil Young HDCD's do have peak extension enabled. But the 2000 live album ROAD ROCK VOL. 1 does nat have peak extension.
