I agree. Artistically Gene Clark exceeded his potential (which is really more important). The Byrds lost a lot when they lost Gene, but Gene was able to flourish as an artist when he went solo despite the shortcomings of his commercial success.

Chi Coltrane. Thought she was going to be the next big thing. Looked like she had it all, but one and done. Wrong again.

I loved that single too. I own her first two albums but there isn't much happening on them.

For me, Ryan Adams never topped Faithless Street, which I thought was perfect. After that, I only liked a couple of songs on Jacksonville City Nights and that's it.

All my friends love him and tell me I'm nuts, but the rest just doesn't grab me

but he made 4 classic albums ... that is one more then iggy pop... and you must take in consideration that the first 2 big star albums where made with chris bell... don't know who wrote the most of the songs...

I am a big fan. I wish GM had released more albums between his 2nd and third solo album when he was at his creative and vocal peak. However, after watching his recent documentary, I understood why this did not happen. I think it is great that he actually released some high quality materials. To me, his first three solo albums are masterpieces of popular music. But you are right, if he could have released another great album before his passing, he would probably have gotten more proper reappraisal.

In my eyes, he did not fulfill his potential by a country mile. He had already quit making this kind of music before most people heard ANY of these songs.

In 1970, I predicted that The Bugaloos would be the next Beatles.

Needless to say, I suck at predicting.

Still, I think with the right management they could have been huge.

I would say Liam Hayes and Plush. "Three Quarter Blind Eyes/Found A Little Baby" suggested pure genius. "More You Becomes You" was sublime.

"Fed" was bloated and patchy, with a couple of stunning moments.

"Bright Penny" would have made an amazing 4 track EP.

I think we can all learn from this.

I'll probably get skewered for this, but I was having a similar conversation with my sister the other day about Van Morrison. Astral Weeks is one of the all-time great recordings, and we both felt like he never came close to it again (and was he even trying to?).

Davey Graham, the original U.K. acoustic guitar hero basically ended his career by deliberately becoming addicted to heroin because he bought into the Charlie Parker myth of smack = genius

I've always gotten the impression that Joe Walsh just wants to play his guitar, get high and have a good time, rather than going the artistic route. Considering he seems to be one of those musicians that everyone likes (even people I know who dislike the Eagles like Walsh), I'd say he has accomplished what he wanted to.

Makes the sublime Tubular Bells and is touted as this young genius, yet never manages to recapture that magic again.

No one has ever come close to that again. That's a once-in-a-lifetime record. I'm just glad I'm around at the same time as that record.
