If your record is toast try out your cart with the other side of the damaged record and see how it sounds without damaging another record.

As a vinyl newbie I learned quickly not to lay records out while I was cleaning them, because cats like to sit on flat surfaced things. That's how my near-flawless Roy Orbison record got a nice deep scratch on the last song on side 1. I think it was when I rushed to scat her away that the claw came out as she jumped off it. So if the cat gets on top of a priceless record or piece of equipment, approach them very slowly.

Your diamond will be fine and if the stylus is bent you’ll know right away. Your sound quality will be super crappy from what you are used too and definitely not balanced. They don’t usually bend just a little; it’s usally ...... Cat-astrophic

    Couldn’t resist.

You can always visually double check your cartridge alignment to make sure nothing was moved. It sounds like your cartridge wires survived. You would able to see a bent cantilever and the diamond tip should be ok. Your AC motor/belt/subplatter/platter should be ok also. Your tonearm should also be fine, but, if we're talking mountain lion sized cat... :D. Sounds like your record took the hit so hopefully your plinth was spared claw marks.

Actually, I misread the vet's advice, and I just turned the hose on her. Did not work out well.

Don't blame the cat. Blame the person who put the turntable where the cat could jump on it.

She might have been trying to go back so we could hear it all again.

Oh you have BIG trouble there, haha! I know the instant panic from a cat playing with a turntable! Your Orbit is fine. The motor can stop without damage, the platter bearings can easily tolerate the force from a cat with "catitude". As long as your cantilever looks straight, I'd say you're in business.. just check the alignment and tracking force and play your records.

So right about that, what does more damage than a cat? a drunk! I had a pair of Acoustat 1+1 electrostatics set up in my living room. A housemate decided to bring her "bar party" home.. so guess what? This intoxicated man walks straight over to them, "Oh what are these?" then topples into one of them, knocking it against the wall. In a panic I ran over as he attempted to stand it up.. took over from there, righted my speaker. He was profusely apologetic but I threw all of them out! haha! Except Suzi who got a lecture from me, haha!

I have the same turntable and cats are the reason why I always use the dust cover (even though audiophiles say take it off).

I don't know whether my cats have never really been interested in the turntable or whether they know better not to screw with my stuff. I like to think it's the latter.

It seems like my turntable is okay. I tried several test records and they sound fine. Tracking force is still good. Nothing funny was happening with anti-skate.

The cantilever appears straight, but I always have a hard time judging. Does anyone have any tips? Does the mirror trick actually work?

Oh, and the cat is fine. I told her she was a huge pain in the butt.
