While admiring my Cary amp I noticed one of my 2 rectifier tubes isn't glowing. It doesn't appear to have had an effect on the sound. I'm still hearing music out of both channels. Am I risking any damage to my amp if I continue to play music? Are these tubes like kidneys? In other words it's better to have 2 but one's ok? It will be several days before I can get a replacement tube shipped to me and I can't bear the thought going without music for a week :shake:

    Thanks in advance...

    Chris

If your 5U4 was really out, you wouldn't have any power to that side. It would be dead. Replace it anyway but if you hear sound, it's working..

Weird. So even though it's cold to the touch it's still working? I guess it must be. Back to my DCC Pet Sounds then :)

It's COLD? How can it work? Do you have a diagram of the amp that you could post?

Yep. It's completely cold to the touch. It's a Cary SLI-80 I got from Upscale Audio. I'll try to find a diagram...

    Chris,

Yank out the tube altogether. Does that channel still play?

Plays fine in both channels without it. Carol K is shaking my walls.

    Heh.

It's a miracle! I'll send the news crew over.

Are you sure you have the 5U4's? Can you read the writing on the tubes?

If so, PUT THE TUBES BACK IN, IN REVERSE ORDER, IN OTHER WORDS, PUT THE ONE THAT DOESN'T LIGHT IN THE OTHER CHANNEL.

    Which one lights up?

It says 5U4 on the tube and they came from Upscale Audio so I'm sure that's what they are. I waiting for my amp to cool so I can switch the tubes. I really appreciate your help Steve! Back in a minute...

What I want to see is if the tube is bad or the socket..

OK. I put them in reverse order. The tube that didn't light up is now in the other (right) channel and it still plays fine out of both channels  So we know that the tubes are fine but something else has gone awry?

Does the tube that didn't light up light up now that it's in the right channel?

Heh, I mean, does the supposed bad tube now light up or not?

A 5U4 is a diode, right? I'm kinda on decongestants, so forgive me.

Unless a SS diode is replaced in there and YOU don't know about it, that's impossible. There would be no powah like Steve said.

Yes. It lights up. Must be the socket but both channels somehow play fine.

Does the good tube that you put in the left channel now NOT light up?

    ****. I'm stumped.

You have a bad socket connection on your left channel, but somehow the amp is working. Impossible. Was the amp modded in any way?

I don't think so. I bought it new from Kevin at Upscale Audio and I haven't done anything to it since then.

Maybe there is really an Adcom solid state amp inside.

Try taking all of the tubes out. JUST KIDDING.

I'm stumped. Does it still sound good?
