Sean, do you have the U.S. LP with the A&M logo at 12 o'clock? I have it and find that one pretty rare. I also just picked up the 2015 heavy gram reissue on Herb's new label "Herb Alpert Presents", which sounds really good and it comes with a cool credit card looking download card, that features the "Whipped Creme" logo on it!

I've got that album and I give it one more star than that "Re-whipped" CD, but only for novelties sake (and note, that is more for the cover, rather than what is on the actual vinyl)!

I didn't know until recently that Herb and his second wife, former "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66" singer, Lani Hall's daughter was an actor.

One last thought that I have on that "Lonely Bull" album …

Anyone who knows anything about the great success that Herb had with his business partner Jerry Moss and "A&M RECORDS", knows that they were two of the greatest names ever in the music and publishing business. Luckily however, Jerry Moss found out very quickly to avoid staying a songwriter, as this song is one of the few (if only?) songs, that was co-written by Herb and Jerry together.

    Pure dread …

Oh c'mon, it wasn't that bad. Two or three are absolute travesties, but if I'm in a mood for something exploratory, I'll spin it.
But I can see why it's not for everyone.

Don't listen to what the other posters say. If you are really a Herb and the TJB fan, you should get the first two albums. The first two albums give the most Tijuana bull fight vibe in addition to "South of the Border".

All Herb Alpert is awesome. How did you not know this? I'm having his 'Casino Royale' as my funeral music.

I'd imagine the MONO would be much better than the stereo remaster cd I have. It's got that awful unbalanced mix like Cream's stereo of Fresh Cream. I like the Beatle and many other, here or there, wide mixes of the 60s...but this Lonely Bull makes my head turn sideways. o_O

I like the music though. I don't have a MONO type B button on my receiver but it's one I'd use for this release....sheesh !

Get a double Y connector to enjoy the MONO vinyl better.

I don't have a turntable nor vinyl. Haven't had my large collection of records since 1983.

All of the Herb Alpert & TJB albums from South Of The Border through The Beat Of The Brass are well worth acquiring. They were reissued about 10 years ago by Shout Factory but appear to have gone OOP since then.

The Shout Factory CD's are now out of print, but the good news is, that now in 2016 Herb is reissuing 27 titles of his old "A&M" catalog (including every TJB and solo album) on CD and on vinyl. I already mentioned earlier in this thread, that I have the 50th Anniversary LP of "Whipped Cream & Other Delights", that was just released on Herb's new imprint "Herb Alpert Presents". Supposedly Herb's nephew Randy Badazz, (the kid who helped Herb stay hip with co-producing the album"Rise", back in the '80's), was behind the mastering of all of these!

More info on the above info …

Seems that Randy Badazz prepped the catalog for remastering, but that Bernie Grundman did the actual remastering (or at least he did on the 50th Anniversary of "Whipped Cream …")

Look, if we're talking about getting these albums at thrift shops, will it kill anyone to try them for a couple or so bucks a piece just to check them out? Not like anyone has to drop $150 for a copy from the Tape Project to give them a try.

Indeed. In my area NM originals are $2 or less. Try them.

It's about time to get a turntable, a phono cartridge, and a phono preamp.

Are the mono versions of the (65-68'ish era) Alpert records true mono mixes or fold downs?

At the risk of diverting the topic, can someone please help me understand what makes Herb so great? I've always dismissed him as light easy-listening stuff (admittedly with excellent playing and arrangements). I'm aware that many here hold him in high esteem, which makes me think that I'm missing something. What is it?

A great pop sensibility and a real knack for catchy, feel-good, mariachi-style horns. Either you tap your foot, or you don't.

BTW - can I just say that Vol. 2 has many good things to recommend it -particularly Marching Through Madrid (love my minty 45) which features horse hooves echoing over cobble-stones. I find it very affecting.
