Hi-Res Download News (HDTracks, ProStudioMasters, Pono, etc.) & Software/Mastering Part 12**

Discussion in 'Music Corner' started by Gary, May 9, 2015.

  1. My guess is that this is not the SH who's forum we are posting on. Either its a misprint, or there is another Steve Hoffman.

Have there ever been any of Steve's masterings available for download?

Edit: Or, I am about to learn something I did not know :)

Aloha! Could it be Friday again already? Yes, it is and that means we've got a treasure trove of both new releases and fantastic reissues in the PonoMusic Store. Willie Nelson is back with his album Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, featuring guests such as Cyndi Lauper and Sheryl Crow. To commemorate his new release, we've just launched a sale on Willie's hi res catalog titles, so dig in and hear why he's such an American musical icon. Other new releases include titles from Bonnie Raitt and Supersonic Blues Machine, as well as long-awaited releases from Santigold and Emitt Rhodes.

On the reissue side of life, if you're a Todd Rundgren fan, you're in luck, as 8 of his classic titles are now available individually, including the Something/Anything? release. Also in hi res for the first time are 4 releases from indie legends Sonic Youth, including Goo, their major label debut from back in the day. Add in some Phil Collins, Serge Gainsbourg, Lani Hall, Marvin Gaye and Jacques Brel and it makes for quite an eclectic reissue day. Oh...and last but certainly not least is the hi res debut of the soundtrack to Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. Yes, that's the Gene Wilder original, with songs by Leslie Bricusse and the one and only Anthony Newley!

And with that, here comes the weekend...

I compared this to the original CD - the CD is brighter - the DR numbers are similar so my thoughts are the CD has the treble goosed up a bit. This could be closer to a flat transfer of the master tape.

Over at Hiresaudio in Germany, they have the Todd Rundgrens listed as 2016 remasters and they have a Beach Boys Surf's Up listed as a 2016 remaster. Are these just errors?

I like Bonnie Raitt now and then. My CD's are great, but this new offer - not great. I should really stop myself from dropping in here, but as of now I blame my visit on the cognac.

Marvin Gaye "I Want You" at Pono is very interesting. 192/24 and ~ $20.00. Now if I could download it without using the Pono downloader (which wants to redo some of my metadata), I'd get it.

I picked up Face Value and it does sound amazing. Sorry I do not do the DR numbers nor did I compare to my original CD Disc. All I know is the FLAC sounds clean and vibrant to my 52yr old ears

It is much cleaner and vibrant than the CD. Going by ear however it is louder unfortunately. Someone care to post the DR numbers?

    Miles Davis prestige remasters.

I got Walking, Musings, and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants.

Seem pretty good. DR values are in the 12-14 range. Some sound energy up to about 27 KHz.

I'm afraid I don't know which mastering I have for Face Value's CD (it's a WAV file ripped from a CD I left behind when I moved) but it has the same DR as the new FLAC: 14.

And this sounds great. It's got a 10 DR, but it's mixed slightly flat to presumably create the appropriate mood.

My apologies, upon a second listen the DR level doesn't seem as bad. The new remaster is still cleaner(instruments sound more real). Sounds like a remaster campaign worth getting.

The $17.98 24/96 "hi-rez" download of Bonnie Raitt's new album is DR 7, just like Slipstream. What a disgrace.

Now I'm confused, the 2016 remaster of Phil Collins's Face Value album from the DR Database lists a DR of 11 for the CD. Is the High Resolution download file of the 2016 remaster a DR of 14 or were you referring to the DR of the 2013 HDtracks listing? As of this moment there is no listing for the 2016 remaster High Resolution download.

I'm using TT DR Offline Meter on a Mac, I suppose that might be the issue. This is the hi-res I have:

Most discs were listed as DR 14 except for the 2016 remaster which lists the CD as DR 11. Perhaps someone will eventually post the 2016 hi-res DR values. Seems like your reading may be correct then unless someone else posts otherwise. Thanks.

I just discovered that the PONO software can calculate dynamic range. It also dawned on me that I had just done In The Air Tonight, and not the whole album (I had assumed that ITAT would be enough, considering the quiet-to-loud dramatics.) Turns out there are a few 16s in there.
