Is there enough room on a single DVD-A disc to include the following:

    1. MLP encoded 96/24 surround mix
    2. MLP encoded 192/24 stereo mix
    3. MLP encoded 192/24 mono mix
    4. Non-MLP encoded 96/24 stereo mix
    5. Non-MLP encoded 96/24 mono mix
    6. Non-MLP encoded Dolby Digital surround mix
    7. Non-MLP encoded DTS surround mix

Basically, this would give even people with regular DVD (i.e., non-DVD-A) players access to all three mixes. Bear in mind that the early Beatles albums were pretty short.

I don't think it would quite fit. I very roughly calculate 8GB or so. My numbers are rough, plus you have to throw in menus. And you know they aren't going to release them without bonus material, video clips, etc. A DVD-9 holds about 7.95GB.

This is based on only 30 minute albums!

Hybrids may be a factor...I think that the initial flipper hybrids will be limited to DVD-5, which only stores 4.3GB. Not sure about this.

    Compromise is inevitable.

Of course this is purely speculative, but I would predict something like this.

    DVD side:

    1. MLP encoded 96/24 surround mix
    2. MLP encoded 192/24 stereo mix
    3. MLP encoded 96/24 mono mix
    4. Non-MLP encoded Dolby Digital or DTS surround mix, not both
    5. Video and other bonus materials

    CD side

    1. Original stereo mix, remastered
    2. Original mono mix, remastered
    3. A bonus track or two.

Note that the CD side is a lot like the Pet Sounds stereo CD.

I hate to be so practical...but I am realistic. Heck, I'd jump up and down if even my version came out. I don't see yours happening.

If you made a double sided DVD, you can do it.

    1. MLP encoded 96/24 surround mix
    2. MLP encoded 192/24 stereo mix
    3. Non-MLP encoded 96/24 stereo mix
    4. Non-MLP encoded Dolby Digital surround mix
    5. Non-MLP encoded DTS surround mix

Notice what I took out... ;)

    Sckott,

I don't see the trend towards DVD-18. I still think redbook hybrid is inevitable.

And if you'd rather have two lossy tracks instead of an uncompressed mono track...well, at least us real Beatles fans know where you stand. ;)

    Yep!

I don't think a mono hi-rez would be marketable at all for this release. Too many newbies saying their disc or player is "broken"

But! If you were talking about a White Album DVD-A, I would be all for a MONO and STEREO side. The MONO side could have outtakes and sections of film that were done while Paul was doing "Blackbird" and such. There's plenty of material that Anthology didn't cover in that era.

A stereo and mono whitey double sided. That gives me a stiffy.

Not as inevitable as you think. Because DVD-A was conceived of primarily as a surround sound format, backward compatibility with CD players was never part of the DVD-A standard, and at least from a few news reports I've seen, there are serious compatibility issues.

The serious compatiblity issues are with single-sided dual-layer DVD-A hybrids. Look for flippers soon.

Mark Waldrep of AIX said this at HTF:

I'll wager hybrid DVD-A will be in our hands this year.

Is it possible for the DVD-A side to be dual layer?

There are issues with DVD Hybrids with many players. It may not ever happen. We'll see.... :sigh:
