That is a good one, of course when McBride left Prokop did sing lead on songs like Pretty Lady and Can You feel It.

But not NOT a hit either, at least in the US. The second single from Exile, it peaked at #22 on the US chart, and was included on 3 Stones anthologies, including Made in the Shade and 40 Licks. Add that to near-ubiquity on FM radio, and I think it qualifies.

Likewise, ZZ Top's "Tush" "only" got to #20, but I think we can agree it's a hit, no? Bassist Dusty Hill took lead on this, and while he took 4 lead vocals on this album (Fandango!), it's much more typical for him to take only one per album, or only share lead vocals on a track or two. On several ZZ Top records, he took no lead vocals at all.

Great example! Add "Blue Skies," and, while not a hit, "Celebration" for a handful of iconic appearances.

The Crusaders were an instrumental band with no singer, so that's a different kettle of fish, I think.

Yes indeed, but at that time, McBride was still in the band... given that Sunny Days was the name of the album too, maybe that was a reason McBride left... I saw them on that tour... great concert.

I totally agree with those other bands. I'd throw The Beach Boys in there too based on the same criteria.

Now what about those songs that Richard Carpenter sang? :tiphat:

How about Oh What a Night? A duet of sorts but surly the lead vocal isn't Frankie. Don't know if there are other songs he sang. See, I don't even know his name. Much like he didn't know the name of the girl that took his........(an experience that ended much too soon!)

Nah - I like "Spies Like Us" to some degree. Certainly not a great song, but better than anything the Carps ever did! :)

EDIT: And the last one was mentioned in the very first post. Duuuuh. My apologies.

One thing I've noticed with a few choices, such as Brewer, Nancy Wilson, and my own suggestion of Noel G., is that after scoring a hit with the non-lead singer, it seems that subsequent efforts had them in more prominent lead vocal roles.

BOC: "Don't Fear the Reaper", "Godzilla" and "Burnin' for You". Kind of an awkward situation in which all of the band's hits are not sung by the lead singer and the singles featuring the lead singer are not hits. When Tom Werman produced their Mirrors album, he basically wondered why Eric Bloom was singing so many songs since all the singles he had heard were tracks featuring Buck Dharma.

I will toss in Tears For Fears. Early hits "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter" and then "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" sung by Curt Smith. Then on the other hand "Shout" , "Head Over Heels" and "Sowing the Seeds of Love" by Roland Orzabal. Sort of a sticky wicket when a band has more than one great singer- Eagles, Cars, Fleetwood Mac, TFF etc- but makes the band much more diversified !
