Hard to think of Dickey as "not the lead singer" though, since on that album he and Gregg both had three leads.

Pet Shop Boys - "Paninaro '95" (hit #15 in the UK) is (mostly) sung (well, rapped actually) by Chris Lowe. The only one out of more than forty Top 40 hits not sung by Neil Tennant

Kelly Keagy has always split the vocals with Jack Blades.

Sort of--"Africa" was Paich and Kimball, while "Rosanna" was Lukather and Kimball. But I consider both Paich and Lukather to be regular Toto lead singers as well, so to me neither counts for this thread (likewise for the Cars songs with Ben Orr on vocals--someone who sings around 40% of the leads is still a lead vocalist, IMHO)

What constitutes a "hit" according to you?

The 1992 song 'When She Cries' was a crossover hit on the pop charts and the country charts. Due to the departure of original singer Larry Stewart at that time, this song features competent lead vocals from the talented drummer John Dittrich.

Madness - Wings Of A Dove & Michael Caine were both sung by Cathal Smyth AKA Chas Smash instead of Suggs. I can't think of another example of somebody not even being credited as a musician on a bands first few records, which were massively successful around Europe, who went on to become a songwriter of hit singles and lead singer on them. I really like his vocal on Michael Caine.

Was going to mention this too, but they didn't really have a lead singer - they all sang!

As the main songwriter, but not the lead vocalist, Martin Gore has sung a few of his own compositions throughout Depeche Mode's career.
Of these, A Question of Lust and Home were both hit singles.

Does "These Dreams" by Heart count? ... sung by Nancy Wilson. I'm not aware if she sang lead on other tracks :)

I agree but up until that point Gregg was clearly the lead singer. I think Dickey only sang lead on one song prior to that album.

You're right but the OP lists Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" which is not exactly a hit either. It is played on the radio ocasionally but it's definitely not a hit so the criterion is not all that clear.

Marshall Tucker's "Can't You See" sort-of counts (Toy Caldwell sang often enough but wasn't the nominal lead singer).

Gregg Allman was definitely lead singer of that band. Dickey had two lead vocals on Brothers and Sisters not three, including Ramblin Man which is still their biggest hit and only top 10 single. But his only previous lead was Blue Sky from Eat A Peach.
