    Same with Joy Division.
Dead Souls, Warsaw, Digital, Autosuggestion, Glass, Atmosphere, Kokamino, From Safety To Where?, Atrocity Exhibition, Passover, A Means To An End, etc.
Some of their "hits" if you could call them that did have the title in the lyrics; Love Will Tear Us Apart, She's Lost Control, Transmission. Much the same as New Order, it would be easier to list the Joy Division songs that contain the lyrics in the song title.

The original Japanese title was "Ue O Muite Aroko" ... which is the first line of the song when sung in Japanese. (The hit was by Kyu Sakamoto.) The word "Sukiyaki" isn't in the Japanese lyrics, either, thus making it a song title that doesn't appear in two different languages. The title was changed by someone at Capitol Records (Dave Dexter Jr.?) because he thought it was a hit but it needed a title that Americans would understand.

Not to be too picky but I think the title was changed in the UK before it made it here. Apparently by Louis Benjamin, head of Pye Records when he released an instumental version by Kenny Ball.

Would "THE INNER LIGHT" qualify? I don't think I've heard George sing the title.

Weird Al - Another One Bits The Dust, Beat it, I want Rock n' Roll and American Pie:

    A long long time ago
    in a galaxy far away
    Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
    Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
    We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...

Oh my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I know who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
    They interviewed the kid
    Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said, "Now listen here
Just stick it in your pointy ear
I still will teach this boy"

He was singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
    'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gungans died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
    The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
We were singin'... My my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

With respect to "Tear the Roof Off The Sucker," the 45 edit doesn't contain the title but the full-length version begins with the title phrase repeated several times. Great tune!

  22. Are we allowed to include instrumentals? :)

Apologies if any of the following have already been mentioned.

The name of this song is "Movin' Out," which of course is mentioned in the lyrics. "Anthony's Song" is the part in parentheses.

    Beagle's original post:
"Don't know if we've done this yet, but...

Hit songs whose title was not in the lyrics (which made it virtually impossible to try to identify the song you heard by looking at the Top 40 chart). Usually you would listen for the words repeated the most times to assume what the title was.

I would like to keep it to songs that were hit singles, or at least released as singles, since without these restrictions you could include half of Led Zeppelins songs. But you could include Immigrant Song since it was a single, for example. OK, we can include popular FM radio tracks as well. But no instrumentals!

    An odd one:

"Reach Out of the Darkness" by Friend and Lover

The repeated line is actually "Reach out IN the darkness." Why the title is "Reach Out OF the Darkness," who knows?

  25. Edit. :o  I saw Tim quote the orignal post with that HUGE section about Led Zeppelin. Sorry. :o

There were also two errors. Song Remains The Same and Steely Dan - Time Out Of Mind. A source that I sourced  had the song title incorrectly listed as Time Out Of My Mind. My brother corrected me when he saw it and so did Tim Neely. :)
