Wow! I am very surprised (and happy) that Coquitlam in BC is on that list. HMV moved from a pretty decent sized store (like the same size as the Metrotown HMV in Burnaby now) into a smaller space about a third or quarter of the size when they restructured a few years ago. I didn't think that Sunrise would take on that space.
Hopefully it works out because it's a twenty minute walk to there instead of a 40 minute walk/transit to Metrotown or 30 minute drive over a toll bridge to Guildford Mall in Surrey.

Nothing on Vancouver Island though. That's surprising.

I wonder if there's any possibility of keeping the big guitar in place? It's not as iconic as the Sam sign but still it is a distinctive. As for the HMV stores I never failed to enter one when I saw one but I rarely would buy anything and I'd feel like a louse.

Up until a couple of months ago I had no idea Carlingwood Mall in Ottawa had a Sunrise Records.
After stopping into the store a few weeks back I instantly wished I still had no idea it existed. Incredibly small store with an underwhelming selection.
We are incredibly lucky in Ottawa to have a handful of great independent stores like the Record Centre and Vertigo in this city.

If they are keeping Carlingwood open I doubt they will be taking over the Bayshore HMV location as the two malls are pretty close to each other.

  8. I was in there on Thursday and already almost all of the music products were gone. But if anyone around here is in the market for a Harmonium vinyl box set or the last In-Flight Safety LP, I bet they'd still be in luck.

The Harmonium sets were gone, as was the XX ones, when I was in on Sunday, I expect they've been shifted to another store!!!

Is that list around 75-76 stores? So only 20 currently open HMV stores will live on as Sunrise.

  11. Over to Gatineau presumably; I don't know what an HMV in a place like Rideau Centre was doing with, what, three copies of that thing? Anyway, I might swing by after work to see if there's any extra-stupid good deals on the remaining DVD/BR selection. It's at the point where I might go in for some things I wouldn't pay anywhere near retail for.

True, but you would have to think Bayshore would be a wiser choice. Bayshore is massive in comparison with better transit access.
Carlingwood has little drawing power for someone who doesn't live in the immediate area.

Rent in Carlingwood is probably significantly cheaper than Bayshore I would think.

One question would be where is Sunrise going to get all the stock to open up all these stores in such a short space of time, and will the demand from them for vinyl to stock the stores affect the availability to other independent stores?

In such situations, the survival/demise is often pre-determined by the existing lease and ability to re-assign the terms and conditions as much as any store traffic figures.

For the island proper, three locations:

    East: Galeries d'Anjou
    South: Carrefour Angrignon
    West: Fairview Pointe-Claire

On the South Shore: Promenades St-Bruno (made the news recently for the pilot school plane crashes)
And across the river to the North: Carrefour Laval.

From the Facebook page, the megastore location doesn't seem to be an option. Too bad the warehouse location across the street that opened at the same time (in Les Cours Mont-Royal) was completely repurposed into a food court years ago.

2,000 vinyl titles per store for 75+ locations is 150,000 LPs if they only order 1 title per store. Hitting $3mil wholesale just on vinyl stock right out of the gate.

If they have a silent investor and labels are willing to do some back bends then I suppose they could fill orders with relative success on short notice.

Unless Shoppers decides to get into the music biz I really doubt it + I think Hard Rock is looking into relocation.

I agree with both comments. I am just having horrible images of the next time my wife drags me to Bayshore and there not being a music store to run into to keep my sanity!

They've made deals with most of their suppliers. I think a couple held out, but they've got most to agree to some sort of favourable terms. Still, they've got a lot of work to do to get all the stores stocked in time.

Not sure how their level of supply requirements will affect stores but I think there may well be some sort of an impact.

I hope it really doesn't have an impact on other stores.

What I do hope they do however is also have some sort of focus on cd's too, it still is the biggest selling medium out there after all, and I probably buy as many new releases on cd these days as I do albums, if I'm being perfectly honest there's some types of releases I prefer to get on cd than vinyl, but I'm finding I'm having to buy a lot more cd's on line now than what I used to, I certainly enjoy browsing cd's as much as browsing racks of vinyl.

The flagship store is now selling off awards, billboards, etc. in addition to appliances, furniture, etc.
