I enjoy looking through these types of threads and at everyone's selection. I look at those chosen that I have, that I am familiar with and those that I don't know. Occasionally there will be a couple of picks that stand out that I don't have that pick my interest in checking them out further. In this case it is two albums that I have had some familiarity. I've just added them to a Tidal playlist to review again.

    • Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love this is an album very highly thought of that I have had int he past but that I just never really connected to and like some other famous albums (Love Supreme, Astral Weeks, Bitches Brew) it takes me some time and several attempts to finally "get it". We will see if this time is the charm.
    • Patti Smith - Horses only God knows when was the last time I heard this album. I'm sure it has been over 30 years. The only Patti Smith I have and like very much is Dream Of Life. Round 2 coming up later this morning.

Both the Nina and Joni have been previously mentioned but that doesn't lessen the quality of the choices.

I much prefer Easter to Horses, which never clicked. I'm a big fan of the NY rock if that era, and even a big John Cale fan. I just don't think the songs are any good; a lot of bluster but not much substance. The cover and the opening minute are deservedly iconic (why progress with a lame cover of Gloria though..?).

I don’t believe anyone had mentioned Turbulent Indigo, though. Fantastic later Joni.

Uh...no...Little Girl Blue and Turbulent Indigo weren't previously mentioned. I don't mind being fact checked....just get the facts right. Thank you for your quality of choice approval.

Milla's video for 'The Man Who Fell' is based on fellow Slav Maya Deren's celebrated avant-garde film 'Meshes of the Afternoon', which coincidentally was shown behind Happy Rhodes during the Security Project gig I recently attended. Maya was quite the stunner - she had that young Geena Davis thing going on. Not that Milla is any slouch.

Old school (1990 and earlier) - These are long time favorites that I rarely listen to anymore. Once something is familiar to me, I rarely listen to it again. These three are the ones I listen to the most, just thinking about them makes me want to hear them again.
Mouth Music - Mouth Music - the wonderful Talitha MacKenzie
Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir - Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares I
    Cowboy Junkies - Open
New school (2000s) - I feel the same about these as the three old school
    Ekova - Heaven's Dust
    CéU - CéU
    Portishead - Dummy
    Last few years
Barbara Hannigan - Hans Abrahamsen: let me tell you
    Mary Halvorson - Imaginary Sea
    Nicole Atkins - Slow Phaser
    Last year
Félicia Atkinson - Hand in Hand - My favorite release from last year
Jamie Branch - Fly or Die
    Saltland - A Common Truth
    So far this year
    Anteloper - Kudu
    Lucrecia Dalt - Anticlines
    Thumbscrew - Theirs

"Afraid." I think the correct statement is "Yoko would be afraid."

I don't think there was any bid for pop stardom in that, more punk IMO. I like the music. I don't particularly care for that song, but some of the other songs I've watched since she was brought up in the thread are not that bad, still nothing to do with pop.

But Diamanda Galas has (and displays) way more vocal chops than Yoko Ono, no? Probably more instrumental chops too, though I'd have to hear them in a keyboard battle, which isn't going to happen.

I think Yoko's art, at least vocally, is more defined by her limitations than Diamanda's (which isn't meant to be a knock on Yoko -- some of my favorite artists are defined by their limitations -- though in truth, I have very little interest in her work).

I know I submitted my list back on Page 3 with all 3 Albums I selected were by Kate Bush, but when it comes to my Favorite Female Voice & Music combined(a lot of it with the Band Rufus), 'Ain't Nobody' like Chaka Khan.

Chaka Khan also did a Cover of a Prince Song(Below) and made it better than his original-IMO. There is a reason she is one of the main Music Artist, who will have a big part in Aretha Franklin's Funeral Services.

Checked out that NPR list, and for several of the ladies there is a different album than the one listed that would make the top of my list:

    Linda Ronstadt Prisoner In Disguise
Emmylou Harris Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town
Donna Summer Once Upon a Time
    Kate Bush The Kick Inside
    Grace Jones Warm Leatherette
    Alicia Keys Elements Of Freedom
    Beyoncé 4

I agree on Joni Mitchell's Blue for the #1 spot though.
