I see that the Horace Silver RIP thread is gone. For those of you who may have seen that thread earlier and didn't know...Horace is indeed alive.

NPR has spoken with Horace Silver's son, Gregory. Horace Silver is ALIVE, "drinking coffee and eating breakfast right now."

I've been thinking about Horace lately as I often listen to any one of the 15 CD's I have of his. He's my favourite Jazz pianist of all time and I think he's one of Jazz's finest writers. Like Duke Ellington, he had a great ear for melody, talent and could always 'swing'.
Good to know the "Hardbop Grandpop" is still swingin'.

Funny, just the other day while exploring the new Julian Bream box set, I learned that Bream is still alive, though for some reason I thought he had passed long ago. It made me want to post a thread entitled 'Julian Bream is not dead'.

Good to hear. I was a bit skeptical because I couldn't find any corroborating articles.

Although Horace Silver is still with us it appears that he has Alzheimer's Disease, which also ended the life of Max Roach. Say a prayer for him and his family.

Some of that album was recorded on the day I was born: Aug 29th, 1959!

Great to hear! Hope he enjoys his breakfast :)

  17. Saw him live at the Chicago Jazz Festival, September 2, 1994. Nice memories. I had just gotten into listening to Jazz a few years before that.
