So I was looking into inexpensive solutions for a friend who wants to transfer some old 78s. I know crappy DJ turntables aren't really what this forum is about, but hear me out.

I saw a turntable from Numark that advertised it was good for 78s, because Audacity software would convert from other speeds. So I wrote an email to their tech support asking whether they sold headshells so I could install a 78 cartridge for her. Obviously, I'd be concerned about the larger grooves.

Tech support, from inMusic Brands, wrote back:

    Thanks for contacting me today,

You do not need a different cartridge just follow these steps and it will change it for them.

Note: You can record your 78RPM records by recording them at
33 or 45 rpm, then changing them to 78 in the Audacity software

If there’s anything else I can do to help, just let me know!

Horrifying. I can't believe the representatives of any turntable manufacturer would actually say such a thing. I should point out, the line about "note" was a graphic he pasted in. I have typed it here for convenience.

Gosh, this doesn't strike me as par for the course at all! I just assumed Michael Fremer worked the Numark technical service queue.

The numark ttx/Ttxusb is quite possibly one of the best 78 rpm turntables on the planet

Obviously tech support is not the most knowledgable on the subject. Audio should not be converted digitally, even if played back with a proper cartridge. They obviously were not interested in selling you another headshell, you can purchase one elsewhere, and for less.

    Yes, you can swap headshells.

Any turntable can be used, as long as you have a 78-capable cartridge, and you don't need a USB output - just use the output on your amp/receiver or phono preamp, and use the right cable or adapters to attach to your computer's mic input.

If your table doesn't have 78 speed, record it in Audacity @ 45 RPM and let the software fix it for you.

As for the Numark tech support advice, I wouldn't expect a dude who works for a DJ equipment company to know the finer points of 78 playback.
